There was a blizzard that night yet I had to leave Missoula. While driving on the I-15 alone, suddenly, a gusty wind blew my car off the Freeway and got stuck in a ditch. Tried everything I can to get back on the road but failed. Finally, in desperation, I opened the door to assess the situation. The snow was at least one foot deep so there is no way that the tires could have a traction. The air was so freezing that I couldn’t breathe in without cover my nose with a scarf. Thinking of put some wood under the rear tires might get me out of this mess so I walked around to gather some. By the time I put enough twigs and branches under the tires, my hands turned purple-and-blue even with mittens on. I turned over the motor and slammed the gas pedal to the floor … only to find out that these twigs and branches were thrown away. Knowing I was in a big trouble, how was I going to make it through the night? I had the engine running to the Max just to keep warm. By Mid-night, the motor ran out of the gas so went off the heater too. With only a Down jacket to keep me warm, as the temperature plummets, I fell asleep not knowing whether I’ll wake up tomorrow to see another day? Was it delirious due to hypothermia or dreaming, in pitch black I felt the car jolts, my instinct told me that it’s just another gust of winds. Next day a guy banged on my car and asked me whether I need any help. He offered me a cup of hot coffee, Dang, this is the warmest coffee I ever had! I checked with my watch, it was 10 am and my car was parked on the shoulder of the Freeway already. That guy drove his snowplow and towed my car to the nearest Gas Station. Before he left me, I thanked him for hauling me out of the ditch. He replied: “No, I didn’t, you are lucky! If you ditched in then I wasn’t able to see your car!” This happened in the winter of 1982 when I was a student in Montana. Ever since this episode I see life from a different perspective!

Been given a gift, she told me that it’s a lovebird. Naturally I asked a clerk in a pet shop the food for lovebirds. The first day it didn’t show any interest in eating the food until the second day. The first thought popped up to my mind was that the previous owner must fed it with different foods. As days go by, its stool became more and more watery so I showed the bird to the clerk who told me it’s a parakeet! I was given the right food this time - Kaytee’s. After seeing people keep their birds in the cage, I feel so sorry for birds who lost their freedom so I left the cage open. In the first couple days it seemed to enjoy the space by itself and the privacy by staying inside the cage. Until one day I came home noticing the cage is empty! In panic so I whistled and there it chirped back! Some times while I was playing the guitar, it singed along with the melody. Things went well for a month or so until one day I noticed that it perched on a book and was spacing out in front of a window where there were lots of sparrows outside! One morning while I was opening the door, it flew away through a gap of less than a foot! I’m not sure how to think of this episode? Have been asking myself “Have I nurtured it well?”. Had the cage kept clean? Had I given all the attentions, love and caring it needed? I bear nothing in my conscience - after realizing the freedom is above love; Suddenly I feel so happy for it! I’m looking for the bird who will stay with or fly back to me; A lady who knows how to juggle love and freedom!
