Despite the fact that just about every critic in America panned this movie - some said it was 'unwatchable' - I took my nine year old son, a friend of his and my three year old daughter to see this film. I had high hopes that Whoopi Goldberg (Ermintrude, the cow), William H. Macy (Brian, the snail) Sir Ian McKellen (Zebedee), Jon Steward (ZeeBad) and Jimmy Fallon (Dylan, the bunny), who were some of the voice talents in the film, could at least provide some entertainment.

Heck! Multi-Oscar-nominated actress, Dame Judy Dench was the narrator. Could it really be that bad?

Regardless, I had every intention of disliking Doogal; or, at the very least, settling in for a nap while the film raged on. I have to admit that - despite my best intentions to nap - I found Doogal to be a cute and fairly engaging film.

Sure, the film's plot was sub-par. The evil Zeebad, who was released from his merry-go-round prison where Zebedee, the force of good had kept him for ages, wanted to take over the town and become the Lord of the Springs, c'mon! The search for the gems that would restore the merry-go-round prison - and bring Zeebad to justice. It would also un-freeze Doogal's owner, Florence, voiced by Aussie singer/actress Kylie Minogue, and her friends, who were trapped in this winter wonder-less-land.

Yes, there were tons of flaws with this film; but, it was charming. Watching Doogal was like taking a pleasant mental vacation. There were a few laughs. There was nothing really life-threatening or earth-shattering going on. You could watch the movie while being pleasantly detached - and albeit - a bit entertained.

All in all, I'd say Doogal is a movie that the kids can giggle at and you can too if things like plot and substance don't stand in your way. Definitely rent it when it comes out on video. You could find yourself pleasantly surprised - and enjoying a film that everyone else hated.
