Gettysburg is my favorite movie of all time! It's the only movie that I consider to be perfect. I love having war-movie marathons, and Gettysburg is always the one that I look forward to the most.
The film is more than four hours long, but it's over in the blink of an eye. It has the best musical score I've ever heard--seriously, the music contributes to the film's awesomeness more than any other factor. Even though it describes the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, Gettysburg is a PG movie. There isn't any foul language or any grisly deaths on-screen; this helps romanticize the battle in a way that can be appealing to almost anyone.
If you like Gettysburg, then I'm sure you're already aware of its prequel, Gods & Generals. Have you seen the movie Glory, though? Glory is FAR from my favorite war-movie, but it does show us an interesting point of view of the Civil War. Nothing beats Gettysburg, though, in my opinion.

That was thee best movie ever. It was produced by Ted Turner. No one was ever allowed to reinact that war on those sacred grounds. Ever. Ted Tuner was turned down. Then he noticed on the tours ride that you can see telephone poles in the distant and that made it unrealistic. He then went back and offered to pay for all electrical lines to be underground in the city. He offered in exchange to use that hallowed ground then they agreed to let him use it only to him and no other. He was actually in that movie but I never saw him. Ted Tuner is a civl war buff and he made a dream happen. Great movie.

It is a durn good pseudo documentary. I say pseudo because it isn't a documentary, but a movie about a true to life event involving real people and some of their dialogue is authentic and mentioned in other people's memoirs, but some may not be. Nevertheless it is a great (but somewhat long) movie about the Civil War and a single battle, with a monumental mistake made by Lee that totally turned the War around into eventual defeat for the South.
