Having seen MANY films over the years ranging from the silents to modern day productions this is the movie thats stuck with me the longest and one I always go back to. A fantastically moving and heart warming journey through the life of an English school teacher from his early days trying to win respect from his unruly pupils to his final days as an elderly staff member reflecting on his life and the pupils hes known.
Robert Donat gives an inspiring performance as the unassuming teacher and it never tips over into over-sentimentality, winning him an Oscar for best actor in a year considered to be the finest ever for cinematic releases, 1939 (Gone with the wind, Stagecoach, Wizard of Oz). Greer Garson is also amazing as his solid, dependable but ever graceful and beautiful co-star.
What I like most about this film is the fact that its a film that moves mens hearts as much as it does womens, thanks to the strong themes of male bonding and father/son type friendships in a school system, it will take a strong man not to shed a tear by the time the credits roll.

Not normally into old black and whites..but this is a great film.
