Declaration

Because love is such a wondrous theme
I gave my love when a love I got
alas in truth it was but a fiery dream
scorched by flames hellish hot!
We loved so much that we loved again
we loved till love had gone
the sadness I felt I cannot explain
now in coldness I live alone!
Love’s flaunting flame soon burned out
while my heart ached just to divide
when my love’s hot fuel was raked about
love’s cold ashes remained inside!
True love I naively believed to be mine
glowing in me like a precious stone
my neon heart then was a lover’s shrine
now in darkness it beats alone!
No beauty I see now can I honestly fear
by pretty posture look or smile
with flattering word or a crocodile tear
than the one my fancy can beguile!
No more shall cupid fire passion’s shot
into my heart till love has grown
scorching me within its flames so hot
best I should freeze alone!
Lovers in disguise I will always defy
with the words I speak here now
I declare the glance of a woman’s eye
about as true as a woman’s vow!
I will hold in contempt a lady’s heart
if that heart I have easily won
and steel my heart to a beauty’s art
coldly intent on living alone!
I’ll put my once loving heart to rest
as my love’s labours lie lost
now it shall no longer beat obsessed
for I remain a victim to my cost!
Like a widowed Albatross forgets to fly
the lone phoenix being another one
they seek no lovers and neither shall I
as I lay my head to rest alone!
