Rivers also stood by her joke when reached by The Plain Dealer for comment on Wednesday, telling the Cleveland newspaper, "I know what those girls went through. It was a little, stupid joke. There is nothing to apologize for. I made a joke. That’s what I do. Calm down."
The joke was tacky, this response indicates her ignorance.
She knows what those girls went through? I think not. Nobody knows what it was like to have their experience, except them.
Whether it's right and proper for comedians to have freedom of speech, is somewhat a separate issue from adding to the women's trauma. After all they've been through, would it really hurt Rivers all that much to apologise for any distress caused?
I never cared for her or a hand full of others that have the same tactless humour. Don Rickles used to make me ill. I did not understand why he would insult people so aggressively when I was a young man. I do know that these people will not apologize to anyone most likely, they are paid to piss you off. And the thing is that people pay for them to do it. Even this thread gives it more life. Cheers.
MrRick77: Was Joan Rivers Kidnapped joke uncalled for ?
I voted "yes", but wanted to point out that some comedians use the "drop-shock" in their schpiels. Lenny Bruce, Howard Stern, George Carlin all insulted and shocked their audiences, often using terrible current events to "illustrate" their puns, etc...Remember all the corny, horrible jokes that circulated at the onset of the AIDS crisis, or when the Challenger exploded? Nasty stuff out there, and I don't "get" the humor in those routines, either, but Joan should not be singled out. I guess if you really disagree then change the channel, don't watch her. It's simple. I don't care for David Letterman. Solution? I don't watch him! You can't get rid of those things you disagree with, but you can choose not to participate.

There's a whole range of laws in place designed to remove the platform from certain people and views. The principle of free speech is already compromised, they can and do get rid of those deemed disagreeable. Anyway, she is an extreme egoist, individualist and narcissist to the point where the gays have even made an icon of her, but her popularity amongst the base shouldn't privilege to her a free speech that others do not have. Society could silence the degenerates, and it doesn't have to be left to the individual to shut-in, shut-off and retreat from the larger social world like some kind of autistic.

I did say that I voted "yes"; the joke was uncalled for, so slow down to a three second sprint, will ya? I am well aware that the principle of free speech has long been compromised--it is unlawful to cause a riot in a closed area such as a theatre, etc.. by the superfluous screaming "Fire!", and so on. Still, even with those laws, American authorities allow quite a lot still, to go on, whether or not the majority likes it or not. This is what I was referring to when I stated that you can't get rid of those things you disagree with. Assuming you absolutely must hear it in the correct vernacular, I will re-phrase it to "You OFTEN cannot ENTIRELY get rid of MANY of those things you MIGHT SOMETIMES disagree with". Better??

After more than five years of university, countless CEU classes, and a thirty-plus year career in the professional medical/social work field, I do not remember one instance where changing the television or radio channel caused autism. For real. Not even once!::roll:
She reminds me a little of a blonde female version of Prince...and her voice goes through me the same way his does...I just change channel when she comes on like I do with others...They have freedom of speech but we all have the freedom to choose whether to listen or watch...
Oh believe me I cannot stand her...So I choose to never watch her...same as others...Frankie Boyle to name but one...When they need to use "shock value" to get a laugh well leave them at it...and listening to an audience laughing with that tone "well we know we shouldn't" just adds to it...Leave them at it...
Oregongold: Joan Rivers is a JOKE!!!!!!! She's so bad that even her plastic surgeon was like, can we just put a bag over her head and call it an improvement?
I tried not to pass remark on her personal appearance, it just buys into how vile she is...besides the fact she is a bad version of Prince female wise..I find her a horrible individual
When laws start to censure comedic repartee, it is the start of the end, when society bans speech we will end up with a 1984 style newspeak. Most comedians use tragic events as material for humour, it is up to the individual listener to decide if they think it's funny, Joan Rivers has done no more, no less than any other professional comedic actor. To censure her would in my opinion be very wrong. We have in the west a limited freedom of speech, every year that freedom gets less and less, though people making out they are offended by certain words, phrases or subjects, offence is their problem not societies and therefore up to the individual to deal with it.
