Because they are volunteers? Our military is all volunteers. Your salary depends on the rank you earn. Everyone starts at the bottom and the starting pay is low.
Whatever it is, it's better than $00.00. If I was flat broke, unemployed, have a crappy home life, being nagged day in & day out to find a job, always getting in trouble, I would surely enlist, at least I'd have 4 years of steady employment eat well and learn a trade possibly even get a college degree, travel the world etc.
As a Veteran, I'll tell you. Because I believe in my country. They clothed me, fed me, gave me direction, taught me discipline and honor, taught me comradarie, taught me how to fight, and taught me skills that I use to this very day. That, sir, is much more than minimum wage. In fact, a million dollars a year couldn't buy me what they gave me. You should step up and try it.
During a conversation with my son the other day but I never inquired about what he got make so I have no idea on the income.
I do know that they do receive housing allowance etc.
My son also told me said that whenever someone says they are thinking of joining the military he tells them to join the navy or air force. But to avoid the Army especially the Army.He said the air force will allow you to persue education stuff more so than the Army will while you're in the service. They get treated better in the Navy and the Air Force. It's not prison but it got close at times to feeling like that in the Army.

Thank you for your service CapNemo! I'm not sure why everyone signs up, I do know my heart, thoughts, and prayers are with each one, everyday. My son is starting his second year, in the army and hopes to stay in till retirement.

felixis99: this guy's hilarious. the only way they get less than minimun wage is if they sign their checks over to their mamas
NO, not true. In the military you are on 24 hour call. There is no overtime. Minimum wage is based on hourly pay with overtime coming after a certain number of hours. Lots and lots of military members serve way more than 40 hours a week but the pay doesn't change.
