reb56: think i quit voting/for good,good luck its a joke here.
I only voted once and quit as soon as I realized that the political figures weren't really and truly taking mine and other peoples interests to heart in the USA.
Like you say reb it's become a one great big joke and the joke's on us.

so as an American trying to understand the world around me.... rather than the usual trying to figure out what the heck is going on in America because it is so darn confusing.....
Please explain how this election stuff in Ireland works?
Do you vote for individuals in parties as in representation by population? or do you vote for a person and what they stand for? What does FG stand for? or for that matter FF, Lab, SF or others?
Not all of us are just interested in our own - some of us actually care about the world around us.
JeanKimberley: So what are their policies - what do they say they will do for the people?
They are a bunch of Populists and Socialists. I have no time for them. I have no idea what their policies are really, but generally it all involves robbing people of worth and giving it to people of no worth. Their Northern Ireland branch and it's paramilitary wing used to shoot and blow people up, mostly British security services, which it can be said earned some of it anyway... but they are now in power sharing in the North of Ireland. They make a lot populist rhetoric here in the Republic of Ireland, and in opinion polls do well (~20%) but don't hit that mark in elections.
They're basically a small version of the Democrats in the US, past violence included, though for very different reasons.
galrads: Óglaigh na hÉireann ? I thought they were illegal there and a designated terrorist group in the USA and UK? (Not trying to be funny)
I thought you said before we basically were all terrorists, Guido.
The Provisional IRA is one of many separate "IRA"s that have existed, although they have some organic and institutional links down through the decades, they have been more or less illegal for almost a hundred years here. But... since they as a group basically are inactive now, their political wing is considered somewhat a separate entity insofar as they are politicians and not gunmen.
JeanKimberley: So what are their policies - what do they say they will do for the people?
They promise a lot of things - but a lot of it is simply unrealistic and they are often voted for by people with ehem, limited amount of brain cells or as a protest vote for the current government.
I have no time for them and listening to them on the radio causes a headache.

I read they were linked to some big robbery there... what's that all about? Why doesn't Ireland do what Scotland did, which is hold a respectable election of all Irish to become a united country? or is it a logistical nightmare to hold the vote in the one country and simultaneously hold it the Irish UK part.

Nah, I never believed all were terrorists, just the majority, maybe, back around WWII. However, It is still known in some parts of Ireland that most Irish men are still appropriately named Sid, Sid.

In the spirit of world sharing, we can lend you our Fox news and our voting idiots too - please.... take them off our hands.
