KNenagh: There are no diamont engagement rings where I come from and I find the circus surrounding engagements, weddings etc. completely off putting.
The same here.
I have never had an engagement ring and when I did marry (and I was married for 24 years) by a Catholic church my dress was blue just to upset my parents and my in-laws whom wanted me to wear white

KNenagh: They sometimes have red wedding dresses in Germany for a church wedding and all colours and styles are going for a wedding at the registry office.
The Catholic church traditional wedding here requieres the bride to be in white/pearl so it represents the lady's purity and the men wear black ()

Virginal white/ivory would be the norm here too, but I don't think it's compulsory for church weddings.

KIBALUV: Do you like something standard, or unique?
My vote went to brilliant round cut, although my favorite shape is pear.
The brilliant round cut is the most popular and, from an investment perspective, retains its value best, so for resale, it'd be the best choice. It also gives the maximum light reflection, so it sparkles more. That's assuming that it's a quality stone, of course.
Pear shapes just don't work on a ring. Haven't seen any good designs.
Politics of diamonds aside, they're a commodity, same as gold. You just need to be careful where and who you buy from.
