When we were children, most of us thought of the many things we wanted to be when we grow up. But as one gets older things change and some of us didn’t grow up to be what we wanted to be. But it’s never too late to try. (Is it?)
No. I wanted to be a scientist and when I expressed this to my guidence counselor in middle school, she told me that scientists are like artists, they starve to death. So I went into oil burner repair.

no. the first time i can remember being asked what i wanted to be was at about age 16...at that time i wanted to be a sherpa. even then... i didn't really know where that idea came from and had to look up sherpa. i was pleased to find out that men and women receive equal pay for working as sherpas...(that woulda been around 1970-something...)
later in my early 20's i wanted to be a university art professor. and i did become one.
later.... i wanted something different and changed occupation a couple times.
most of my life...i just wanted to be an artist and i wanted to eat colored food and get off the grid. ( a diet of rice, potatoes and onions get old fast...)

Yes and no. My mother thought I should become a veterinarian because I was always bringing home injured animals and birds to take care of. I told her I couldn't do that because it would tear me apart to lose any animals in my care. In my teens, the pressure was on in school for girls to become secretaries so that's what I became when I first joined the workforce but with the passing of time, the path that was set out led me to where I belonged which was in healthcare. In essence, I ended up in the field of caring for people and it fits in well with my nature.
I've always wanted to be an air stewardess so that I could see the world!
Then, I got fat and heavy in my late-teens. All hopes of becoming one were quickly dashed and squashed
BUT
Just the other day, my 17 year-old daughter confided in me that she might wanna give this profession a try after she finishes her high-school end of next year. Hmmm.....I might be able to re-live my dreams through her?

when I was a kid I wanted to be Audie Murphy or John Lennon
After being told by teachers that I'd do much worse in my exams than I did and guided by career advisors towards an office cubicle or a diploma mill I decided to get a job in a factory. I was lucky from there as I never thought I'd have these skills and be running my own business now. I'll always remember that it was businessman, a retro and paternalistic greatest generation businessman, who educated me more than any teacher or social worker.
But no what I do is not what dreamed of as a kid, yet I am happy all the same to have done things very differently to my peers most of which have come from uni and are now unemployed, underemployed or employed in something not all relating to their qualification(s). Another thing which helped is that I was always very practical even as a child, from aged 14 back in 2001 I foresaw the great recession and this greatly influenced my career choice.
Yes, I was lucky to be everything I wanted to be as a child, a singer, teacher, TV journalist and presenter, jewellery designer... The funny thing is that I am now doing something I have never dreamed about...but I truly love and enjoy it...

Great question! Thanks for asking. When I was a young woman, I wanted to be a flight attendant. But I ended up being what God wanted me to be, a publisher of the history and future that the powers-that-be do not want us to know.
