In my opinion, the value is minimal. I believe it contributes to the breakdown of society's ability to communicate and interact with others in real life situations and conversations. Just like texting.

Sometimes the forums are far better than anything Jerry Springer could televise....just kidding...sorta.
The meeting someone aspect of it has worked for some folks but being realistic, most will never meet anyone. For me, the few wonderful friends I've made and the sharing of good times and positive interaction in the forums with folks from different cultures is what keeps me here. Aside from that, time is best spent wisely out in the real world.

It has given me an opportunity to meet some people I don't think I ever would of met if I had not been on here 
I feel also it has been a learning tool for me. I am a curious person by nature. When I don't know about something. I study it. I am more aware of world news than I ever was. I know where countries are on the globe. Things that didn't hold my interest before. I was just happy knowing the continents.
It has had its draw backs. There are some I would like to know better yet distance stops that. 
Is it time spent wisely I think it depends on what one is looking for on here. 
And I know what time and day it is in other parts of the world.

To the LonelyINAfrika: Yes, time well and wisely spent.
I met one lady who had a great dog, and another lady who lived right beside the coffee shop in town. She had these cards that entitled the patron for one free coffee after nine paid ones. Well, a lot of patrons just threw the cards away, and the lady and I used to collect them, and go on coffeine binges. Free coffein binges. The best relationship I have ever had. We were both always wired.
That was about that, i lived in a small town.
I live in a bigger town now. I met this lady in real-time, and we've been dating. She's everything i could ask for and then some. She's much better than what I deserve. She agrees, but she says she's in love with me... I am just extremely lucky, I guess.

I've been knocking around here for a few years now (on and off), and personally i think the best way to get to know GENUINE (assumed) people are through the Forums and Blogs. As for the other members, it seems to be like a lucky dip in actually finding a REAL and HONEST person here...

A good and sensible poll
For me, i don't know yet, i just joined this site last February of this year, and i chosen this site by coincidence, after all we could get out from any without much hazzle, and it's free.
I think, it can be something of a useful, for a past time, exchanging ideas on forums, it's a complimentary one for learning, though i can say, we can't always learn good things here, somewhere, yes, reliable sources, of course, but i consider here a good hang out.
About dating, not much for me, or not really expecting specially from far places because i don't have the intention of moving out from where i am at present. And flying somewhere to some brief moments doesn't mean anything to me, the most ideal is, finding someone here not living far from me, and yes, to add, not easy to find real situations on unreal sources, but some of my well appreciated forum mates, i miss them ,, and will be connected to them for nice exchange, for the rest,, time will tell,,,

Others i have and do email and chat with again friends ,
What disapoints myself is spending time writing letter,s to some others even after they invited me to write them and no responce , so i think in those case,s they are ether scammers or its just a game for them , I had one scammer to night and knew straight off he was ,so end of,

I joined the forums, beginning of 2014.
I've enjoyed my stay, for the most part.
I'm here mainly for distraction purposes. As all the regulars know, I have an ongoing family situation that I am dealing with. I come on here for some escapism, because life can be a bit stressful, at times.
I did have high hopes of finding someone when I initially joined, but am a realist, and distance is proving too much of a barrier, as well as my own personal circumstances.
I can still dream though, can't I?
I enjoy the banter and meeting new people...so, its mainly been a positive experience on this site for me....with a few dips on the way.

I put chat with interesting people because that is true and I have been fairly plain that I do not plan on meeting anyone on here in a romantic sense....I'm just here for the forums. I have met a lot of nice people over the years. I don't see this as a viable tool though for anything romance oriented. I think sites like this you have to work at it and spend a lot of time searching and meeting etc, and I tried that for awhile and just did no enjoy that aspect of internet dating. Maybe I am too old fashioned but I prefer a more organic context to meeting and getting to know someone.

Doesn't our attitude play a role in making it more or less difficult to meet with someone Special? If we believe here is no one on this site for us, doesn't that create a filter not to see that Someone special even though he/she could have been a perfect match?
