Jesus was probably a historical figure who lived in the Middle East approximately 2000 years ago. However, no historical data exists to prove or disprove this. If Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem for the census as we were told, there should be at least evidence of that. But she would not have had the child at that stage, so he wouldn't have been enumerated. But then again, that census (the first ever held by the Romans) seems to have taken place after Herod's death, so therefore even if Jesus did exist, the dates are all askew.
Does this question imply belief in god? The range of possible answers given suggest it does. Is it not possible to believe that Jesus was a mear mortal with huge pretensions?

loulou77: You don't need to belong to a church to believe in God or Jesus...good for you...
I am for the most part an atheist...
Coming from a religious background & christened in a cathedral, religion is kinda drummed into me but not to the extent of being a regular church goer, although I do visit the odd cathedral & monastery for the historical values, rather than any religious purpose.
YES!!!! John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life

There is still a lot of confusion and mix-up about Jesus and christianity...
Jesus was born in Qumran in a house called bethlehem. His father, Joseph had the title of the holy spirit which is a regular title among the essenic high priests. His mother had the title of a virgin .Back then the Essenes had very strict rules, hierarchy, rules of conduct.Their marriage was composed from two parts .In order to ensure offspring (the long-awaited Messiah had to be born in September which was the holy month of the year)First part couldn't last longer than three years and if the wife doesn`t get pregnant, the marriage is off,but during that time, she has the status or title of a virgin, after that she gets the status or title of sister and at the age of 50-60 ,widow ,no matter if her husband is alive or not.
I consider myself to be agnostic...so i don't believe in anything but i dont dismiss it either. Who knows whats out there. If i had to make a choice i would probably go the more scientific way thou. But in the end i believe in me....and i live by that.
This sure brings out the best in Yankee believers and the rest that hide behind their god. It is these people that l have kept myself from because it is they that are the worst people on this ball of dirt we float on. All two faced religious people should pay my company the money they owe.
