great question, and i'm sitting on the fence.....

while i really like the idea of 'sovereignty off the grid' for myself....not sure how safe we'd all be if this was a choice available to all (gets into questions of integrity, safety for all, morals and ethics....yaaahhhh.... i'm judging... grin)

looking forward to reading what folks have to say about this

If we could do the Chinese island-building thing and give them an island each.
It would be an interesting social experiment

Ireland and NZ are already being bought up ... we both have more than our share of wealthy americans, and down here we have way more than our share of Asians.

The govt here are selling the country out from under our feet ...

That probably depend on what happens to the welfare state.

Dilute the culture to breaking point through diversity removing any bond or sense of fellow-feeling and duty which a nation's rich have towards its poor, then the 1% will declare their own fiefs where all the best education and good jobs are, and the rest of nations will dry up in an uninhabitable waste of a country.

The alternative is the future where multi-culti doesn't completely divide nations and cripple altruistic spirit, countries hold together as a mixture of rich and poor, and we enter the morally blank future of being paid to exist seeing as 90+% of the human race is now obsolete.

Basically "like-minded" would mean similar money and status - new "countries" would follow class cliques like assortative mating - it's not like many countries are now which are held together by shared history, blood, emotion and art. New nations would be economic class-based nations and not nations of culture.

Jono and Hexagon are talking about the gentrification caused by foreign investment and this could be the beginning of the class-based nation/fief of the 1%.

There's one future following the trends of today where we sorta take poverty and climate change seriously, and there's a libertarian future where all the money spent on welfare and tackling climate change is instead spent on giant hydraulic legs for Manhattan Island and London Zone 1 to raise themselves up on and escape rising sea levels and the righteous anger of the common man.

The left will sooner or later figure out that diversity is leading to the future where the super rich shrug off the 99% and live in cities atop hydraulic legs. Then things will get interesting.

That whole post-apartheid society of diversity may very will soon be reality for all - but instead of having the 10% living in gated-communities, which will be old-fashioned by then, we will have the 1-2% living in hydraulic leg communities.

please Things will change when this starts happening. It happened where I live. We use to be a small farming community and then the wealthy americans giggle started to buy up the land. Gone are the days where we proudly boasted of our excellent groves and hello to a bunch of buildings. We are still a small community but thru our winter months the tourist come and we turn into a very busy place. crying I like laid back and relaxed. hmmm But then maybe you think this is a good thing. dunno I know some do wave

Sadly like minded people do not stay that way. The human race changes their way of thinking quite rapidly anymore. They would only bring their problems with them. Different pasture same manure. I don't actually believe that a group of people can live together in harmony. There always will be boat rockers. JMO

well.......realistically, no. Though an intriguing idea, the land you purchase likely falls under one political jurisdiction or another already.

In essence you would need another 1776. Let me know if you'd like advice from a previous winner...heh heh

The next best thing of course, is to exercize your private property rights to their fullest ............ Do try to avoid Wacolaugh

Which disenfranchised people are you refering to?

anglojoe: Should like-minded groups of people be allowed to buy their own land and start their own countries?

Should?
Why not?

Is it possible?
Because people might be likeminded in one subject but differ in another.

Which traits would you consider to be included in a likeminded group of people?

You know this got me to thinking about Auroville. It should of been a paradise but now it has become riddled with crime and not what it was meant to be years ago. At least it is of my opinion that it is not what they had hoped. dunno

They already are allowed. Liborland in Europe is the latest example.

However, just because you create your own country does not mean other countries will recognise it and the problems with issuing passports and other legal documents are huge (not to mention infrastructure like roads, buildings, electricity and sewage). Liborland is still struggling a year or two later and has really got nowhere despite actually being recognised by many other countries.

And I forgot to mention that it's extremely hard to find land that is already not part of any country. There's no way an existing country would allow anyone to buy part of it and create another country within its borders.

Hi, I haven't met many, you're right, but if 1% of the population of a country are like-minded, and by that I mean share a view of how they want to live, are politically and environmentally aligned, agree about what kind of food is best, how they want to bring up their kids etc, then in a country like the UK it would total 630,000 people.

The old time communes worked in fact from those early beginnings, there is one in Scotland, Dundee I think called the Haven. People live there but also folk from all over the world visit to learn new things.banana
