I think whatever happens, its not very attractive to go back to a stale situation.
If he had "the urge" to move away and live a different life, logic would have it that he doesnt want the "old life" back.
So I think in any case you are well advised to move on and get on with your life, take it where it might lead you now.. and then if he regrets leaving you he might be pleasantly surprised about the "new and improved" person you have become..
or not,
in which case you have risen to the opportunity and made he best out of a bad situation,- you took the opportunity to grow and become a better you despite this set back.
It a win-win.
