Halcyon is derived from the greek word Alcyoni/Alcyona wich is a bird and it can be used to mean "Golden". But since you already probably know all this, i will add a bit of mythology to it:

When Alkioneus was slain by Hercules, his 7 daughters threw themselves into the see in their desperation. Zeus took pitty on them and watching from above, he transformed them into birds--Alcyonides. When time came to give birth, they discovered that they were the only birds in ancient times that had to give birth to her little ones during the freezing winter. So they went up to mount Olympus and found Zeus where they explained their problem to him. Zeus being kind and considerate, aknowledged that indeed they had been unfavored and therefore he ordered that every year, between 23rd of December and 15th of January, there be sunshine so that Alcyon could lay her eggs.

And so it came to pass that ever since then, Central Greece takes a break from the hard winter and Alcyon can lay her eggs. And so it came to be known as the "Alcynides meres" (days of the Alcyona). And Alcyon lays her eggs. And Zeus was happy.
A good thing we now have Wikipedia and googlerolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

Gosh, a"meet" thread that goes on for 11 pages! .... It was SO Good!

The beer here is so good you can drink it for morning "tea" ... and the wine is even better ... once you open one bottle, you just gotta open the next one! ... Maybe that's the reason I cant wake up in the mornings?

I am just SO impressed with the calibre of the Malta Gang ... Anyone not busy saving their fare to attend the next meet here ... well, you missing out Big Time!

.. and this island is Fantastic! Everytime I go out - I buy another jersey! Its a tradition here for the ladies to knit these beautiful jerseys .... and I mean Truly Beautiful Jerseys! and they just so affordable... the price of 2 beers in CH!

And the people here are SO friendly!

I know, it's sad and pathetic that no photos have been posted yet .... for you all to see what a fabulous time we had. But like someone before mentioned .... it was hard to catch group shots because the place was rather crowded and busy and I got the feeling all our cameras going off all the time was going to get us Mafiosoed or something...! .. so cameras were just aimed randomly at each other in our drunken frenzy of excitement, so we got lots of head shots of each other. Anyway they will at least tell the rest of you that each person is real and un-posed?cheers
