I failed one question on an IQ test because I did not count the thumbs as "fingers". I had to write down the number of fingers on my hands in base eight, and I put down "10", thinking that the thumbs are not fingers.
Similarly, the kid of a friend of mine got branded "stupid" in grade 7. My friends were new Canadians, and when their kid was "streamed" into the education system, his father was called in to be told his kid was a moron. The father asked, how do you know? The guidance cousellor said, "Well, Pete could not say how much money he has when he has a dime, a nickle and two quarters in his hand."
During my first IQ test, I failed most of the first part of the entire Wechsler Adult Intelligence Inventory, because I was asked, for instance, what the Book of Genesis talks about. The moron that I was, straight out of a communist regime, never read the bible, never heard stories from the bible. I could have told the psychologist what's the difference between means of production and methods of production, but the Book of Genesis I honestly never had heard of before.
In the psychiatric hospital where I was committed for having tried to kill myself, I went bonkers with the question, "a man's reach must extent his overbite." The question had to be answered, "I agree", or "I disagree". I did not know what "overbite" was, not speaking the language well yet, two years after having landed in Canada. They branded me a schizophrenic, though the other indicators showed I was more of a person with borderline personality disorder.
