When Should You Meet Someone From an Online Dating Site

You've done it - you've stepped into the scary and exciting world of online dating. Now you are meeting a few people online who seem as if they might be promising, and you wonder how long you should wait before you actually meet any of them in person. Is it best to meet very soon, or should you be cautious and wait a few months before you meet?

In most cases, it is best to meet within a few weeks of initial contact. If you meet the other person sooner rather than later, you can discover whether or not the two of you actually have any chemistry when you are together. It can be very discouraging to spend a long time corresponding with someone online only to discover that in person the relationship does not work at all. You can often have online chemistry that doesn't translate into real-life chemistry.

You can change a promising online relationship to a telephone relationship as an intermediate step before you actually meet in person. If you discover that you enjoy talking together on the telephone, arrange to meet in a public place for your first face-to-face encounter. If you prefer, you can arrange a meeting in person using the Internet without taking the intermediate step of talking on the telephone.

It's always best to have a short first date with someone you have met on the Internet. Meeting at a coffee shop for a coffee and a half-hour chat would be ideal. Do not commit yourself to a lengthy dinner date and a movie when you are meeting for the first time. After the initial meeting you can decide whether this is relationship you want to continue.

From initial contact on the Internet should not take more than three or four weeks if both of you are really serious about meeting someone.

There is really no substitute for meeting in person, no matter how good your online chemistry and telephone chemistry seems to be. Whether you choose to do that within the first two weeks or for weeks is up to you, but you should not really wait longer than a few weeks. By meeting early, you won't be wasting a lot of time on a prospect that isn't right for you.
