Making Friends Online

Making Friends Online

The internet has opened up a whole new world for those people who have had difficulty making friends in the past. With the large number of social networking websites, online chat rooms and online dating sites, making friends online has never been easier.

Making friends isn't always a simple prospect for many individuals and the reasons could be many. Shyness, physical restrictions that prevent leaving the home, self consciousness about a physical disability, inferiority issues, and a simple lack of some social skills are a few obstacles that keep people from enjoying the pleasures of making friends.

So how is making friends online any easier than good old face to face contact, or even those new dial-a-date telephone services that keep appearing? Making friends online does not require any direct personal interaction, no face to face meetings. Unlike schools, night clubs, or other public gatherings of people, making friends online does not demand a skill in proper social etiquette and physical appearance isn't a concern. Lisps, stutters, and less than masterful grammar don't interfere with a person making friends online.

Making friends online becomes far less complicated when a person is no longer concerned about social status and rejection. Unless you want your online friends to know who you are, you're anonymous. You decide the amount of information going into your profile, which people get to look at it, and what your screen name will be. Making friends online removes the nervous pressures associated with face to face meetings and telephone conversations.

From the comfort and security of home, a person can control their participation in conversations and decide how much interaction there is between themselves and someone else. Making friends online works by helping to erase social barriers and racial biases. Sexual preferences no longer matter; file clerks can socialize with company executives; models get to laugh and joke with computer geeks; and a local jock can befriend the girl he wouldn't otherwise pay any attention to in school.

When prejudices based on social status and appearances are taken out of the picture, making friends becomes much less difficult. Online chats can relieve the pressures of maintaining conversation and make it easier to end the evening's interaction.

Once a person starts making friends online there's normally a large increase in their self confidence. Instead of worrying about how they look, or who's watching them, people can relax and actually start to talk to each other. Once this happens, a person's exterior no longer seems to matter anymore.

Making friends online allows people to know one another beyond physical appearances and friendships made from this kind of meeting can last forever.
