How to Be Social.. When You Hate People

How to Be Social When You Hate People

Are you already dreading the office Christmas party? Are you just a little shy and uncomfortable at social events? How can us hum-buggers and slightly anti-social persons survive forced social occasions during the holidays and other occasions?

For those of us who are more comfortable when left to our own devices, many social events can be pure torture. However, with a few tips and some acquired confidence you can also enjoy a night out.

1. Stay Home

Don't feel obligated to go out when you'd rather stay at home. There's nothing wrong with not being a social butterfly. If your partner enjoys parties and events, you could try hosting them. You might feel more comfortable on your own turf and you'll have slightly more control over the evening.

2. Smile

It will be fake at first, but you might actually find yourself having a good time. A friendly smile will also make you more approachable. Of course, you could always do the opposite and not smile if you do not want to be bothered.

3. Have a Stiff Drink First

Ok, ok, so this might not be for everyone.. but this would likely help when nerves, not just hate, are what's making you uncomfortable. Take the edge off your inhibitions before you arrive.

4. Be Open to Conversation

Don't close yourself off as soon as you get there. Give your companions a chance and strike up a conversation yourself if you feel at ease.

5. Keep your Phone Away

Although it's tempting, do not isolate yourself with your phone all night. You'll end up feeling more alone and left out. Only use it in case of emergency or as an escape route for severe anxiety. Don't be afraid to be spirited away by an urgent call if the night cannot be saved.

Social events can cause panic in the naturally shy, but you don't have to be uncomfortable. Use these tips to get through the evening or even to start to enjoy it.

Happy Holidays!.... (baaaaahhh humbug)
