Blogs Without A Narrative

I don’t have a problem with a picture or video blog, but why not make a decent blog of it? You should really treat your readers with a bit more respect.scold

Don’t just dump a photo in your blog for us to guess what you’re trying to convey to us. Tell us something about the photo or video. What does it mean to you? Share your thoughts on it.daydream

Or are you too scared to write something because it may give away something about yourself?laugh

You don’t have to write much. Just tell us your reflections on it, or maybe just a descriptive heading for each pic or video.idea

This may sound like criticism but it is meant to be constructive and not aimed at anybody specific. Some of you will probably think that I should mind my own business and tell me to worry about my own blog. And you’d be perfectly right, but being the busy body I am, I just had to poke my nose into it.mumbling

But then again, it is all opinion and, as things stand, it is just mine. So do with it whatever you want. You can even print it on soft paper to use it in the toilet.tongue

How Do They Manage It?

I’m very fond of sardines and the other day I bough a few cans of very cheap sardines for R7.00 (about US$ 0.47) per can.wow

Back home I noticed that it was imported from Canada. I normally buy the Norwegian sardines at double the price. Granted, it is not as good as the Norwegian sardines, but certainly no worse that our locally produced sardines that also sell at double the price. I wonder how much it retails for in Canada. How on earth can Canada produce a product that is not inferior to our own, transport it… what… probably 15,000 miles to South Africa and still sell it at half the price?shock

But this is not the only fish that is imported. Baracouta (we know it as snoek), imported from New Zealand, is readily available at most our supermarkets at R30.00 (about US$ 2.00) each. Okay, they are rather small but a fresh locally caught snoek of that size will easily set you back R40.00 to R50.00 each. Once again produced at the other side of the world and transported all the way here, to be sold cheaper than our local product. How’s that?dunno

Is our labor too expensive or our taxes too high?confused

And then there still is the ethic side of the matter. We have a large fishing industry but most our fishermen live under the breadline. What has happened to protecting your local industries against cheap imports?doh

No, I’m not pointing finger at anybody. I’m guilty too, but should government not block imports like this. We can produce enough fish for the nation without importing it.mumbling

Be Careful Of What You Write

In real life you have to place a guard on your tongue. When on-line, your tongue is pretty ineffective, but what you write (type?) is as good as coming from your mouth.professor

Writing reveals your soul. It strips your flesh bare to the bone for everybody to see. Your posts will confirm or contradict the narratives in your profile. Only one irresponsible post can rip your carefully composed profile to pieces. What’s the point of claiming to be a decent and peaceful person, while your posts indicate the opposite?dunno

People will believe what you demonstrate in your posts, not what you claim to be in your profile. And suddenly your entire profile will be under scrutiny, because if you can lie once, you can lie again… and again.shock

The contents of your posts describe you much better than what any narrative in your profile can. It tells everything about you; it will expose your true nature, no matter how much you try to hide it.tongue

Email Security Gone Haywire

Hackers are getting smarter by the day. Two of my three email accounts have been hacked on Saturday. Only a small number of people know my real email address.frustrated

I have one gmail account exclusively for CS friends and I use another gmail account for my friends and family. Then, not to give my email address to all the sites I deal with, I use a yahoo account as a decoy. All the email arriving at yahoo is then redirected to my main gmail account (family and friends) which is downloaded by an email client (Thunderbird) every two hours, hoping to put a layer between my real account and the hackers. It did not work.very mad

Both the yahoo and the gmail account were accessed by a device in Russia. Whoever did that was in possession of both passwords. How did they get hold of that? I have not directly accessed any of my email accounts for months so there cannot be a keylogger at work on my PC.dunno

This is when I appreciate the use of an email client. At the best of times there is very little or nothing on the yahoo or gmail servers that a hacker can use. All my contacts and emails are managed by Thunderbird on my PC. The longest that a message can stay on the servers is two hours before it is downloaded and deleted from the servers. I can only hope that there was not anything on the servers at the time when they accessed my accounts.mumbling

Anyway, I changed my passwords and hope they don’t come back.idea

Sunday Lunch

My sister is playing old man’s marbles today. I don’t like the game, so she did not even bother to ask me along. My father will be having lunch at his retirement village and will be joining her after lunch, so I have the place for myself today.yay

And I’ll be making my own food for a change.grin

I asked Bea to come around for lunch with me; she undertook to bring a salad or two and will provide the dessert. She’ll be here early to give me a hand.cheering

I’m not very fond of chicken but today I’m in the mood for it. I’ll be off to the supermarket to get some after posting this blog. I don’t like the white meat of a chicken; too dry. I only eat the thighs, drumsticks and the wings and only if the skin is nice and crispy. I’ll be cheating today. I’m going to do the chicken in the microwave before putting it in the oven.idea

I don’t know yet what we’ll have with it, I’ll have to see what is available, but spinach, butternut, and green beans will probably win. Those are my favorites. I have potatoes in the house and with a helping of rice it should make the meal. And not to forget the wine. I have a crisp dry white in the fridge since last night.wine

We’ll probably spend the rest of the afternoon listening music. We share the same taste in music and never bother with the TV. In all, I’m looking forward to a blissful day. I always enjoy it when she’s around; it’s a pity she is just a sister to me.mumbling

Your Profile And You

Does your profile reflect the way you see yourself or the way other people see you? If you think that it is the same thing then you have another think coming. You are only who you think you are if most other people more or less agree with that view.professor

When you look in a mirror you only see what you want to see. Other people do not see what you see when you look in the mirror. And they do not notice the same things about you. Some will find certain characteristics more important than others. The things that you deem as important may be completely overlooked by them.mumbling

You may stand proud because of your honesty, but it is not written on your forehead. The fact that you never lie or cheat may go unnoticed to some. Your high morals may be taken for granted and they will be quick to notice your flaws while others may stare themselves blind into your virtues and not notice your shortcomings.uh oh

Some 20 years ago I asked a number of friends and family members to assess me and to write down my strong and weak points in order of importance. Both genders were represented and their ages varied from sixteen to seventy. I was about forty five at the time. I made a similar list.writing

It was an eye-opener. It revealed strong points (important to them) that I did not rate as worth mentioning and weaknesses that I was not aware of. Some of the points on my list appeared nowhere while some only showed up with the younger bunch and other traits were noticed only by the older people. The most similarities were among people of more or less my own age group.shock

So what was the purpose of the exercise? Well, it did give me a few things to work on.grin

You may believe that what other people think of you is not important, but if they see you vastly different than what you see yourself then you are mispresenting yourself.scold

So, I ask again. Who is represented in your profile? Is it the you that you see in the mirror or the you that other people see?dunno

Not that it is important, I just wondered.playball

See, the weekend has arrived. Enjoy it!wave

PS
I cannot find the word 'mispresenting' in any dictionary. I nevertheless used it in my blog because I cannot think of a better word. If anybody can suggest the proper word, I'd be very grateful.help

She Is Not My Sister.

Now that Beapatient spilled the beans, I may as well own up. All my life I had this silly believe that Beatrix was just a sister to me. That was until Sunday two weeks ago when she challenged me to kiss her and then to tell her afterwards that I don’t love her. That kiss changed everything and started a chain of events that cannot be undone. Nothing will ever be the same again.love

I realize now that I have always loved her but I was too hard headed to admit to it. I shudder when I think how close I came to losing her for ever. I can only hope that in the years to come, I will be able to make up for all the years that she so unselfishly devoted to me. All the times she cared for me when I was ill, all the plates of food she cooked for me when I was not well, all the times she cleaned my house, and all the other little things she did for me.kiss

We’ll be signing our contracts next week. My father is thrilled with joy. Beatrix did him the honor to ask him to give her away (to me) in the church as her own father is no longer with us. Initially she was going to ask her brother to do it, but he is my best friend and I had already asked him to be my best man. But my father is a good choice. He knows her as long (and as well) as anybody else and she has known him all her life.yay

My daughters are not too happy about it but they will have to get used to it. I’m getting older and I’m tired of being alone.sigh

This also means good-bye. It was her only demand. I therefore thank you for all the good times here on the blogs and I wish you all of the best.thumbs up

Naturally, there will be those who will applaud my departure; you know who you are. To you I can only say: “May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits.”tongue

Relationship Killers

Most problems in a relationship can be tackled as a couple but some problems are troublesome and sometimes impossible to fix. The main ingredients for a happy relationship are mutual respect and communication. Without that no relationship can endure.professor

Mutual Contempt
If left unchecked, contempt will erode the very foundation of your relationship. Contempt is so bad, it has been identified it as the single best forerunner of divorce. If one or both partners are unwilling to soften and stop fighting, the problem will get worse until there is no coming back.

Never Wrong
You will not always agree with each other. Agree to disagree. As a couple, you need to realize that no one wins when one of you always has to be right. This is made worse by the inability to forgive and by a refusal to discuss the issue further.

Chronic Infidelity
Being in a relationship with a serial cheater is frustrating. The relationship can only be repaired if the unfaithful partner is honest about what happened and fully prepared to leave the affair behind.

Secrecy
Time apart is essential but there should be no mystery about it. There is a difference between privacy and secrecy. A relationship needs sharing and openness.

Incompatible Sex Drives
For most people, a mutually fulfilling sex life is incredibly important. Establish your sexua1 compatibility early on. This is a true killer.

Incompatible Attachment Styles
If you like being close and intimate, but your partner is avoidant and dismissive, there will be problems. It undermines your self-esteem to be with someone who shows you no affection or compliments, engages in mechanical sex and has no desire for closeness with you.

Narcissism
If your partner is truly narcissistic, maintaining your relationship is going to be an uphill battle. Nothing you do will be good enough and most of the time you will be criticized for making life miserable.

Cannot Open Up
You need to lay bare your problems and frustrations. It’s problematic if one of you prefers to keep your emotions bottled up. You will end up distancing yourself from your partner, giving up prematurely.

So, there you are, but none of this applies to you. It is your partner who has the problems. giggle

An Eye For An Eye

I don’t believe that somebody who willfully deprived another person of his life, deserves to live. I’m not talking about killing somebody in self defense. Providing that minimum force is applied, anybody should have the right to protect his own life and property as well as that of another person or persons.professor

If anybody is killed while in the process of committing a crime (say a robbery or a burglary), all those participating in the crime, even the planners of the crime sitting at home, should be tried for murder. They should have foreseen that something of that nature could have happened.scold

And if a person caused the death of somebody else due to negligence or recklessness, he should be severely punished. If somebody failed to do something when he could have prevented the death of another person without endangering his own or other lives, he should be held accountable.sigh

Attempted murder should carry the same punishment as murder. Doing a bad job is no reason for mitigation. It is the intent that matters, not the outcome. If he intended to kill somebody, he should be punished to the same extend had he succeeded. What is to stop him or her from trying again?confused

Neither can politics or passion be offered as mitigation. You don’t kill somebody if you don’t agree with his political views. Inexcusable to say the least! shock

And love does not inspire murder. That is vengeance, caused by obsession, possessiveness, jealousy, or something else in that line. If the intent was to kill, it is murder.talk to hand

Bedroom Cricket

This is a delightful variant of the game if you understand the rules. Unlike games like golf and bowls, there is no green fees payable although there may be ball fees applicable in certain cases.playball

Another advantage of this version is that you won’t need any special gear like in the normal game; it is played with the existing equipment providing that such equipment is in prime condition. The game is played on a pitch and the pitch is normally laid out in the middle of a double bed. As a variation, a rug in front of the fireplace, the couch in the lounge, or the kitchen table will make very good substitutes for the bed. Even the wall of a shower cubicle has produced some exiting games.thumbs up

You can play a limited over version of this game at work in which case the pitch is laid out on the office desk. This variant is called a ‘quickie’.giggle

When in dire need to play, the pitch can be laid out on a car’s backseat but this is not recommended for the ‘not so young’ players because if the pitch is longer than the field. it may cause some discomfort to older players.laugh

The game is usually played by two players; the visitor and the owner of the pitch. The owner of the pitch takes strike at the one end where she has to cover her wickets while the visitor will deliver his balls from the other end. The visitor is advised not to deliver his balls too quickly. He should spend some time exploring other regions of the pitch and pay some special attention to the two pavilions at the far end of the pitch.wow

On the other hand, the owner of the pitch should not guard her wickets too efficiently as the visitor may not come to play on the pitch again if he does not score.grin

The pitch is usually carefully prepared; sometimes the grass on it is kept very short to assure a smooth delivery of the ball and to get some lift from a good length. devil

Occasionally a third player may join the game while it is still in progress, in which case the player receiving strike is said to be caught behind the wickets. The visitor is deemed to be caught with his pants down and may be in trouble if the third player has any residential claim on the pitch.shock

Finally, it is important to leave the pitch in the condition that it was found and to leave no markings on it (unless specifically requested) lest the pitch may have a permanent grounds man. Prospective players should note that most pitches become unplayable at times due to periodic maintenance.scold

Shifting The Blame

I guess nobody likes to take the blame if it can safely be shifted onto somebody else. It is normal human behavior. The further we can shift the blame, the better. We try to get as may people as possible between us and the blame.devil

Sometimes, when there is no way out, we buy face by taking half the responsibility. It is just to say: “Look, I’m not responsible. Somebody else is to blame but he does not want to own up.”innocent

And when all the fingers point at you and there is no way out, we play noble and take the blame square on ourselves. Nothing noble there, were just making martyrs of ourselves while trying to show others how just we are.wink

We’ve been like this since the beginning of time. It is interesting to note who is blamed when Adam and Eve appears before God after screwing up big time.hmmm

Eve has no problem. She can blame the serpent. She does not take co-responsibility. It was the serpent alone. batting

Adam however, has a problem. He had no dealings with the serpent. Other than himself, he only has his wife to blame. But does he do that? Oh no, he’s way too bright for that. He shifts the blame straight onto God. He Said: “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree.”mumbling

A wise man Adam was indeed. What right-thinking man is going to jeopardize his next nookie by snitching on his wife?idea

Life & Death

Death is a somber thought but we must all die. Some may think that we are born only to die but between birth and death, the gods gave us a life.banana

Life is not just about living or surviving. It is about doing things and reaching goals. But time waits for no one. Nothing will happen by itself; you have to make it happen. You have to find the time to do the things you want to do.hmmm

Not every baby that is born gets to live a life like you. If you can read this, you are more fortunate than many before you; and many others still to come. You had the opportunity to live for some time; long enough to take control of your life. The rest of your life is in your hands.thumbs up

There is no point in blaming yesterday for the woes of today. Likewise, your dreamboat of tomorrow won’t sail if it is built on the emptiness of today.daydream

The clock is running. Make the most of today. It is the first day of the rest of your life. Don’t waste it. idea

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present .
