The Fool

Introduction to The Fool,

I have not read a book for 6-7 years now for, I decided that all books read up to then was more than enough to be overwhelmed by information included in them.

However, if it was to pick up and choose just one book from all books read that would have been the one lately recommended to a few people when talked about books.

This is my favourite one, Dhammapada.

The only book read by me several times during different periods and stages in my life.

Each time read as if it was the first time read, the meaning of the verses perceiced/seen differently each time.

Each time, a different message received, a lesson to be learned and applied by me.

All a very hard work , all worth it in the end.

Dhammapada is a compilation of ancient, wise stories/sayings said to have come straight from the mouth of Budha.

My favourite one from Dhammapada has been since the first day, the whole book read and continued to be up to now, The Fool.

The Fool, follows below,

Chapter 5, The Fool

60. Long is the night to the sleepless; long is the league to the weary. Long is worldly existence to fools who know not the Sublime Truth.

61. Should a seeker not find a companion who is better or equal, let him resolutely pursue a solitary course; there is no fellowship with the fool.

62. The fool worries, thinking, "I have sons, I have wealth." Indeed, when he himself is not his own, whence are sons, whence is wealth?

63. A fool who knows his foolishness is wise at least to that extent, but a fool who thinks himself wise is a fool indeed.

64. Though all his life a fool associates with a wise man, he no more comprehends the Truth than a spoon tastes the flavor of the soup.

65. Though only for a moment a discerning person associates with a wise man, quickly he comprehends the Truth, just as the tongue tastes the flavor of the soup.

66. Fools of little wit are enemies unto themselves as they move about doing evil deeds, the fruits of which are bitter.

67. Ill done is that action of doing which one repents later, and the fruit of which one, weeping, reaps with tears.

68. Well done is that action of doing which one repents not later, and the fruit of which one, reaps with delight and happiness.

69. So long as an evil deed has not ripened, the fool thinks it as sweet as honey. But when the evil deed ripens, the fool comes to grief.

70. Month after month a fool may eat his food with the tip of a blade of grass, but he still is not worth a sixteenth part of the those who have comprehended the Truth.

71. Truly, an evil deed committed does not immediately bear fruit, like milk that does not turn sour all at once. But smoldering, it follows the fool like fire covered by ashes.

72. To his own ruin the fool gains knowledge, for it cleaves his head and destroys his innate goodness.

73. The fool seeks undeserved reputation, precedence among monks, authority over monasteries, and honor among householders.

74. "Let both laymen and monks think that it was done by me. In every work, great and small, let them follow me" — such is the ambition of the fool; thus his desire and pride increase.

75. One is the quest for worldly gain, and quite another is the path to Nirvana. Clearly understanding this, let not the monk, the disciple of the Buddha, be carried away by worldly acclaim, but develop detachment instead.

The End.

A meeting with Giant Aloe Vera Plants, their Components and Health Benefits.

It has been raining and raining and raining for weeks.

A half an hour walk at least during these rainy weeks that seemed endless was just impossible.

Until a few days ago when the rain has finally stopped and sun has come out and I decided to make the most of it by going through a walk on the cliffs.

As always when the specific route is taken during my walks, I came across these GIANT ALOE VERA PLANTS.

These specific aloe vera plants always fascinated me exactly for this, their size!.

In comparison to the small aloe vera plants in pots up to then seen by and known to me, they are absolutely MASSIVE and GIGANTIC.

Shortly afterwards, the size of these aloe vera plants would not be the only thing, I was going to be fascinated about as, shortly afterwards, I begun researching and learning about their components and health benefits.

More than 75 components have been identified in the aloe vera plant including among others, minerals, amino acids, vitamins, enzymes and saccharides.

The components identified in the aloe vera plant can be extensively seen in the chart below,

3. Treats constipation.

4. Heals cold sores.

5. Helps with digestion.

6. Boosts the immune system.

Success Vs. Failure.

Embedded image from another site

Success can be defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. In simple words, one reaching their destination.

Accordingly, failure can be defined as the lack of accomplishment of a set aim or purpose or one not reaching their or set destination.

During this process, I found that keeping any set goals or purposes hidden or a secret does help not only reaching a destination faster but, avoiding sabotage from others who failed to reach their own destination, set purpose or aim.

In the end of the day, everyone has their own opinion or the so-called opinion.

Another hearing many differing opinions may lead to confusion.

The workings of the mind do come with intention and purpose in the expression of an opinion.

Not all express an opinion with good intentions or purpose.

It is up to another to discriminate between beneficial and not beneficial, healthy or unhealthy as in the discrimination between right or wrong.

Success as in the case of failure is a matter of choice and how it is defined by one may not be defined by another.

Failure for me is giving up, success is moving forward, marching towards a set aim or purpose, even it is just a small step.

Therefore, progress.

Progress can never be made through giving up marching towards a set aim or purpose, a destination.

Moving forward that is what success really is for me.

Progress and growth.

If there was growth from an experience, no matter how hard or difficult, unfortunate or negative then, there was never any failure.

Failure is the lack of progress and growth.

If another moved forward, even if this was a tiny little step then in reality, this was not failure but, success and a success.

Not reaching a destination but, marching towards a set aim or purpose or destination.

How do you define failure and success?.

Is this dependent on the external or internal?.

Does it regard money, a title or a position?.

Happy Wednesday, April the 11th.

The Underdogs Kings in Ancient literature

An "Underdog" as defined by dictionary.com is,

(1). A person who is expected to lose in a contest or conflict.

(2). A victim of social or political injustice.

Based on the above definition, the earliest literature that depicts an underdog for me is,

(1). Ramayana of Valmiki in the war between King Rama & king Rava.

(2). The second ancient literature that comes to mind is Iliad of Homerus & the battle of Troy, a 10year war won through the Trojan horse.

King Rava steals the wife of prince Ramayana, a victim of already political and/or social injustice.

Prince Paris steals the wife of king Agamemnon.

The similarities in both of this ancient literature are very striking first and foremost on the above.

(3). A third underdog that comes to mind is Odysseus, expected to lose the throne & kingdom by the suitors claiming both his throne & kingdom through placing under pressure his wife to break his loyalty to him & choose one of them as the new King through marriage to her.

(4). The fourth case of underdog that comes to mind is King David in the battle with Goliath.

In all of these cases, the victims of social injustice never expected to win the battle or conflict, have risen up & taken up a battle that was considered lost & won this.

In all of these cases, most may have given up just in the face of adversity & inequality of strength in battle or war taken up.

(1). What lessons can be learned & applied in everyday life and society from the above Kings underdogs(based on the definition of an underdog earlier provided)?.

(2). Have you ever been an underdog, a victim of social or political injustice, in a conflict or contest , expected to lose and in the end, WON?.

(3). What do you think differentiated these kings underdogs from the rest crowd that enabled victory in a war or battle, expected at any point or in general to be lost?.

Looking forwarding to reading answers to any of the above questions.

Note: An underdog can also be a group of people despite the fact that dictionary.com makes reference specifically to a person.

Thank you.
