Something To Lighten the Mood

Have you ever cooked or baked something that didn't go quite right? I do it all of the time. The trick is to try to salvage something out of it because we all know how expensive food is these days.

My granddaughters and I set out to make a chocolate cream pie. Fairly simple (or I thought) and not too many ingredients. Graham cracker crust - easy peasy - the girls had fun smashing the graham crackers. We then added a little sugar and some melted butter. Ta-da our crust is ready!
The filling recipe we used was simple and straight forward - jello chocolate pudding mix, milk and Cool Whip. Now I'm not a huge fan of Cool Whip, I'd rather have real whipped cream but I'm going with the recipe. We mix the pudding and milk together. I let the girls use their cute little whisks. I then slowly and carefully folded in the Cool Whip. We poured it into the crust and set it in the refrigerator to set. The recipe said 3 hours - we let it sit for 6. Not firm enough to slice and serve frustrated You could see the disappointment in their little faces. I said "not to worry girls I have an idea!".
I had them grab some glasses from the cabinet and what do you know - Chocolate Cream Pie ....Parfait complete with the crust. Popped a little real whipped cream on top - it was delicious! They were pleased as punch to serve this up to their mom and dad.
I hope that this somehow is teaching them not to "freak out" when things don't go quite as planned. Sometimes you just have to re-imagine your plans and make the best of what you have.

Where's The Outrage?

Yet another rough weekend here in Chicago. Where's the outrage? Where are the protestors? Where's BLM?
Do Black Lives not matter when other Black Lives are doing the shooting and killing? If they wanted to do something constructive they would come down and march in these areas where the majority of the shootings are happening. But they can't be bothered to do something constructive that might actually draw attention to a real crisis that we have going on here.

Our Wonderful Mayor

Our wonderful mayor will only be granting interviews to reporters of color. Well isn't that special?

If this were a white mayor, anywhere, there would be hell to pay. There would be outcries of racism and discrimination. The protestors would have yet another reason to riot and loot the city. She really should be more concerned with the 40+ people that were shot last weekend or heck, even the CTU (Chicago Teachers Union) "protestors" that are planning to march to her home this evening. Let's do everything in our power to distract everyone from the real problems this city is facing. Warm weather is here and crime and shootings will only be getting worse. Where is her concern for that? I am a lifelong Chicagoan and have seen this city go from being a vibrant jewel on the lake to a living cesspool.

Way back in the 60's, Chicago was a force to be reckoned with. Old Man Daly was crooked as they come but this city worked. I remember the riots of '68. I remember my mom being escorted to her car by National Guardsman simply because of the area that her job was in. I remember Daly giving police a shoot to kill order if need be. He vowed they wouldn't take over his city. Now everyone's afraid to step on any toes and the city has gone to hell. It saddens me that I can't wait to get out of here.

OMG - Will it ever stop?

I'm getting too old for all of this nonsense.....

Unilever brands Dove, Vaseline to stop using 'normal' to describe hair, skin on beauty products

Unilever's brands, including Dove, Vaseline and Axe, will soon drop "normal" from its beauty product packaging due to its negative impact.
The company Unilever has decided that "normal" is not inclusive and plans to stop using it.

The consumer packaged goods company is dropping the word from its beauty and personal care products.

Those brands include Dove, Vaseline and Axe.

Unilever said a study it recently conducted found seven in 10 people surveyed felt using the word "normal" on product packaging has a negative impact.

For people ages 18 to 35, that number rose to eight in 10.

Unilever also said it won't Photoshop models anymore. Company leadership is now committed to portraying people from more diverse backgrounds in its advertising.

"No Thanks"

During this pandemic, we have been home schooling both of my granddaughters (ages 6 and 3). This has been more difficult than expected but it has also been very rewarding to watch them learn and grow. Every weekend I set up the game plan for the upcoming week. I have found a few websites that have been very helpful and use them extensively. Then we add in some fun arts and crafts and I think overall, we're doing a good job.

I have been having them listen to Christmas music the past few school days and thought it might be fun to have the two of them sing a couple of Christmas songs for their mom and dad. We could have our own little Christmas program and maybe make some treats and sing a few songs.

This morning, I pitched my idea to the 6 yr. old. I was met with a resounding "No Thanks". doh

The 3 yr. old is all excited and I'm hoping it rubs off on her sister but we'll see what happens. The little one wants to sing "Suzy Snowflake" so we'll work on it and maybe the 6 yr. old will end
up joining in. I just found it very disappointing. mumbling

This is why people will vote for Trump

I did not write this. My sister sent it to me. I'm not sure where she got it from and really don't care. I agree with it 100%

I need to rant for just a moment. I am 54 years old, I’ve worked hard all my life. I have made my reputation, the good and the bad, and the ugly. I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I have worked hard to get where I am in life. I have juggled my job,, my family, and made many sacrifices up front to secure a life for my family. It wasn’t always easy and still isn't, but I did it all, while maintaining my integrity and my principles. I’ve never put anyone beneath myself or denied help to anyone. I have friends of every walk of life and if you’re in my circle, it should be understood that I don’t have to remind you of what I’d be willing to do for you. However....
I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth" to people who don't have my work ethic. People who have sacrificed nothing and feel entitled to receive everything.
I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it themselves.
I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which, no one is allowed to debate.
I'm tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of all parties talk like their opinions matter to the common man. I’m tired of any of them even pretending they can relate to the life and bank account that I have.
I'm tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.
I’m upset that I’m labeled as a racist because I am proud of my faith and trust in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.
I’m tired of being told I need to accept the latest fad or politically correct stupidity or befriending a group that’s intent in killing me because I won’t convert to their point of view.
I'm really tired of people who don't take responsibility for their lives and actions. Especially the ones that want me to fund it. I'm tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination, or big-whatever for their problems.
Yes, I'm really tired. But, I'm also glad to be in the second half of my life. Because, mostly, I'm not going to have to see the world these people are creating. I thank God I'm on the way out and not on the way in. I just HATE the fact that my children and grandchildren are having to face this screwed up world. I want them to grow up understanding their freedoms of living in America, have respect for authority and the older generation who risked or sacrificed their lives to give us the rights we currently have in America.
Any individual is not entitled to anything. You have a choice to work, a choice to stay off drugs, a choice to make something of yourself. I have nothing to do with your choice. That's all on you. You are entitled to what you earn.

Final Numbers are in.....

63 shot - 16 killed over the weekend here in Chicago. One was a 20 month old baby just coming from the laundromat with mom. The scariest one for me....a 10 yr old girl visiting her uncle killed by a stray bullet that came through a window....just a block away. 9:30 Saturday night. It makes me very sad. What if this were a child in my granddaughter's school? Her school is very small. There are only about 40 - 50 children in the entire Pre-K through 8th grade. Thankfully, we don't have to explain why little Susie won't ever be in school again.

This coming up weekend is a holiday weekend. The weather is supposed to be beautiful. The numbers will sadly only get worse.

The politicians say something must be done. Yet nothing seems to get done. frustrated

This Time of Year...

This time of year make me very nostalgic for the graduation ceremonies.

For a very long time, I worked as one of 2 customer service supervisors for a major graduation cap and gown company. I really loved my job. It was extremely busy from January to June. We worked crazy long hours in the office and many more hours taking work home with us. Everyday was different. Each supervisor was responsible for 2 teams of 4 customer service reps and 2 temps during the "busy" season. Each team was responsible for approximately 30 sales reps except for mine. My team was special. We only had about 10 reps. Our sales reps represented a lot of high priority schools such as Harvard, Yale, Temple, Univ of Penn. etc. Our volume was extremely high and we had to be on point. My sales reps were awesome and I still keep in touch with them.

One of the most interesting things that I learned was that holding a degree of higher learning such as a doctorate, didn't mean that they had a higher level of common sense. They couldn't sometimes, see the forest for the trees.

An example was a man that was graduating with a doctorate degree. He had lost the paper measuring tape that was included with his packet. He was in a tizzy. He wanted me to "fax" him another one. Um sir, I can't do that. The tape is like 8 feet long. I can mail you another one or maybe you could borrow a colleague or fellow student's? His response was "what if they're not as tall as I am?" I didn't know if I should laugh, cry or throw the phone against the wall. We have calls upon calls backed up and I have to deal with this nonsense. I had to explain to him that all of the tapes were the same. All I needed was his height, weight and cap size. He then asked to speak to a manager. My manager spoke with him and ended up sending him to the registrar's office. Then she came out of her office and asked me "what the hell was wrong with that guy?"

We both agreed that just because you think you're smart doesn't mean that you are smart.
