Suzanne Somers, rest in peace...

News yesterday came through that actress Suzanne Somers who survived breast cancer died at the age of 76. Her publicist stated she "passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours on Sunday"
Also stated "Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family"

Not to play-down the death of a movie star, but it appears to be the protocol that they pass away surrounded by family at any time of the night or day... as though they have prior notice of the time of passing.

Speakers in my House...

In a span of 60+ years, I've had lots of speakers in my house. Starting off with speakers reclaimed from junk TV's or stereos left in someone's trash. Hey... you have to start somewhere.
My dad bought a Wollensak reel-to-reel tape recorder with add-on stereo speaker. It was awesome as I could connect it to the TV speaker and record TV shows and it wouldn't pick up sounds in the room when we were all watching Thee Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show!

Learning guitar and my first amp had a tiny speaker, probably 6" but soon after I was able to get something bigger. The name was National and it had 2 10" speakers. I don't remember what happened to it (probably a trade for something bigger) but that vintage guitar amplifier would be worth a small fortune now!

One of my keyboards was financed and when making a payment, my dad saw a bigger amp at the finance office. It was repossessed, probably because it didn't work. He picked it up really cheap and the diagnosis was one wire from the power supply burned at the connector so it failed. Easy fix and I was the owner of an amp with a 15" speaker!

Years later and I had a specially designed cabinet with two 15" high-performance speakers.

Going from band to band and for outdoor concerts I often used 9 speaker cabinets, some fitted with 12" speakers and some with 15" speakers.

I ended up with a custom rig of four 15" speakers in 2 cabinets.

Somewhere along the way, I tried an ACOUSTIC 360 bass amp with one 18" speaker in a large cabinet that had special internal shape to maximize the sound. It's called a folded horn enclosure. It was always my desire to copy one (with the help of the woodshop I was working at) so, I bought two 18" bass speakers and downloaded the specifications of the enclosure.
John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin had 2, Jaco Pastorius had 2, the bassist in Santana had one. That project was put on hold.

In the 90's I bought a bass amp, 100 watts with one 15" speaker. Very nice, but I sold it looking for something larger and shelved that project.

Now, I own a guitar amp, 120 watts with two 12" speakers. My plan was to take guitar lessons, but that project was put on hold.

Since my 2 cousins want me to play music (professionally) with them I considered the guitar amp, but there's a possibility I'll ruin the speakers using bass at a loud volume.
I could buy bass speakers and put them in, but my thought is not modify the guitar amp and buy a real bass amp for practice and gigging.

I did a blog about speaker size and there are all thoughts from 10" to 18" but I'm seeing some manufacturers offering models with two 10" speakers and 300 hundred watts, they move a lot of air and be in a compact lightweight cabinet. The only drawback is the cost. I'm choking on $700 for a freaking combo amp.

Shopping online I see there is a special sale on a smaller model, 100 watts and a 12" speaker. I could buy THREE of these units for less than any of the others and have it easier to move things around, same watts, bigger speakers. Maybe 2 is enough for now.

The sale ends tomorrow, so I have to decide on which which speaker in my House, it's going to be!

The Ring of Fire...

There will be a solar eclipse tomorrow morning, Saturday, October, 14, 2023 that will run in an 'S' curve diagonally across the United States, through Central America and sweep out across Brazil.
Starting around 8am in Oregon and goes to 10:30 in Texas. They are the lucky ones to see a full eclipse. With the exception of the the northeast, Pennsylvania to Maine are out of the path. More than half of America should see some of the eclipse.
It's called a ring of fire because some places will see a perfectly aligned eclipse where the sky will darken and only the outer edges of the sun will show through giving an illusion of the fiery ring.

Yahoo has a news story:

Time & Date actually have an interactive map showing the graduated areas of the most eclipse.

Always, there are warnings not to look directly at the sun, only former presidents can do that. Use a pinhole projector or specialized eclipse glasses. Always there will be reports of people losing their vision because they stared at the sun without proper protection.
Don't be a statistic.

Spin Cycle...

One of my requirements of buying a condo is it had to have a washer & dryer within the unit. I shopped some communities where they had one laundry room at the end of the hallway serving all the occupants of that floor. That could be 10 apartments to use 2 washers.
Are you serious? I shower daily and use a clean towel every time. I don't wear the same jeans 6 days in a row. Laundry is serious business with me and has as long as I can remember.
Some townhouses in this area have a laundry room for every 6 units. You have to carry laundry outside of your unit... rain or shine. That doesn't work for me as Laundry often gets done anywhere in a 24 hour schedule and sometimes dry clothes stay in the dryer until wet clothes need to be dried.
I inquired with one association about installing a laundry in my own unit and told no, it's in violation of their rules and I will be fined for doing so. That includes the mini-euro styles.

The washer & dryer combo in the place I bought was old and I suspected it wouldn't take long before needing replacement. I was right and purchased a large capacity washer & dryer pair manufactured by Samsung.
Going with trends, it was an HE model washer with impeller and not the older style agitator.
Nearly three years later, (knowing what I know now) I would not buy Samsung, HE or one with an impeller.

What I'm experiencing is the spin cycle shakes violently and the machine stops. There are sensors that detect an imbalanced load and magically compensate the rotation to stop the shaking. That ain't happening here...
Sometimes the washer resets and does another fill cycle as it's programmed that way to re-balance the load... that wastes water, electricity and more importantly time. It shouldn't take 3 hours to wash a dozen towels.

I phoned customer support at Samsung and they 'walked me through' the calibration sequence for the spin cycle sensors. Better? yeah, maybe 10% better. I washed shirts, socks and underwear and it only stopped a few times. I redistributed the load each time and continued. The spin cycle with 12 minutes remaining jumps to 25 minutes when you restart it. Bastards...
Next week, I'll call Samsung again. If it requires a technician and a service call... so be it.
very mad

I don't remember this happening with the old style washer where you turn the dial (that clicked) showing all the settings.

Conspiracy Theories...

Oh, so many conspiracy theories and I only knew of a few. I was in elementary school when JFK was assassinated. The gun, the timing of the shots, the trajectory, a second shooter, did JFK really survive and an unknown corpse placed in his casket? Was the connection between Jacqueline Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis established by the government?

Itchy...

A few months ago my cardiologist recommended I increase my diuretic to resolve leg swelling when I sit at a computer many hours a day. If that doesn't work, I should wear compression stockings. Medium compression of 20-30mmHg was the recommendation.
So, I bought a pair from a store that sells medical supplies. They were fitted to my foot and leg dimensions. I found them uncomfortable and would make my legs itchy if I had them on for more than an hour or two.
So, I ordered some from Amazon that were a size larger and kept them on for at least 6 hours. When I removed them, my legs and ankles were uncontrollably itchy, worse than the previous pair.
I researched reasons for itchy ankles and one symptom was diabetes. Ruling that out as my weekly sugar levels are in the normal range and I'm doing brisk walking 4 to 5 times a week.
I put some Benadril anti-itch medicine on the affected areas but it only worked for an hour or two and an itchy episode came back, it was like flipping a light switch!

How do you cure an itch?

You scratch it... I did and broke the skin. This started a viscous cycle.

Trying to make this go away, I'm using different medicines and alternating between antibiotic, hydrocortisone, and Benadril. My leg swelled so much I went to the doctor. He had me go for an ultrasound to be sure it didn't create a blood clot. Simple test... no clot.
The medical technician thinks I've got an allergy to the material the stockings are made from.

I'm headed to some outside appointments so no 'compression' for now... when I return, I've got a day of drawings to make and I'll consider some support hose. 10-15mmHg and some dry skin cream first.

Lightening Siren...

I'm a half mile from the clubhouse of a golf course. On top of the building is a small weather station with a siren to alert golfers of lightening strikes.
It's pretty standard in South Florida where bad weather can jump up in minutes. I've read many of these systems are networked to larger weather centers that use sophisticated lightening detection systems and weather radar. When lightening strikes are detected, the siren blasts out a warning for the golfers to seek shelter.
Typically, I've got the windows closed, a/c on and louvers closed, so I'm not distracted by what's going on around the condo... but I do know it's going to rain when I hear the lightening siren.

I considered purchasing an amateur weather station when I lived in Miami and had a 60' high tower with a string of radio antennas. That must have been 20+ years ago when I was available as a first responder using 2-way radios to assist when a hurricane hit, power was out, phone lines down and no cellular service.

Life and interest changes for me that I'm no longer in a radio club to offer public service. There are many more resources now, so let someone else invest the time and money for weather stations and inclement weather alert systems.

They are all around my area so I don't have to look too far to find one:

Brazilian Butt Lift...

I came across a profile this morning where the photo linked to a Canadian woman who posts YouTube videos. From there I found her before and after photos of her plastic surgery that involved moving the fat from her backside to her frontside.
The process is known as a Brazilian Butt Lift.
I first heard the term more than 12 years ago when one of the stylists at the hair salon I went to had the procedure done. Carla (not her real name) was an attractive woman of Latin/Spanish descent and maybe a little too friendly with me at times. She was difficult with English language and had huge buttocks. One day I was there to see my regular stylist and noticed this woman had gone through an amazing transformation. The shape and size of her belly and butt were smaller and her boobs were noticeably bigger. Her jeans were so tight, they looked like they were spray-painted on!
Woah... what happened to Carla? I asked my stylist and was told she had a Brazilian Butt Lift. Carla was friendlier now then in the past. Part of me said 'go for it' and the logical part of me said 'this could be trouble' so I never reacted to her friendly advances.
Less than a year later when I went to my regular stylist, I didn't see Carla and asked. I was told she had an offer to work at another salon and relocated.
So, this morning reading about a Brazilian Butt Lift, the cost, the pain and the woman/women who have the procedure done brought a smile to my face!

Pets and dating...

I'm sure I blogged this (maybe on another site) and got mixed reviews. I had a neighbor, nice looking woman but she had dogs... lots of dogs. Some were legit with vaccinations and tags. Many of the others were strays and she didn't have much funding to have them spayed or neutered. The dogs multiplied.

The woman dated as I sometimes would see guys and maybe a car overnight, but it became obvious they didn't want to stay long as her place was overrun with her pets. Not long after animal control going on complaints from neighbors paid her a visit.
Police arrested her, they took control and removed the animals.

Yeah, this is the rare case...

Some profiles show people with their pets. Background, foreground and sometimes, it's the pet and no person. Okay, it's fun to have a pet. But what signal is the person is sending out? Does the pet come first and the (possible) mate come second?

I've dated women with pets. Some had children and a pretty normal life. I've seen some where the dog (for example) had control of the house and everything evolved around the pet. Jumping on the sofa, growling at guests, constant barking... and those are the good points!

laugh

Blogs don't ask questions, but I think people are less critical than I am about having pets and it could be a deterrent to finding a mate if your focus is in the wrong direction.

It's not actually worth $739 million...

Trump has a (special) way of placing value on his properties. He valued Mar-a-Lago at $739 million. In today's market, it could actually be worth less than $40 million.
So how does he justify a value of $739 million?
Potential... future potential. It's not worth that now... but some time in the future it will be valued at that number.
My suggestion is go with it... reassess the property value to what he says and make him pay taxes accordingly !!
That should fix everything.

In other news, Trump's business fraud case isn't going so well for him.

The judge fined Trump’s lawyers $7,500 each for repeating arguments he had previously dismissed. C'mon guys... don't you remember what you say and do in a court of law?

While many of the Trump corporations are being blocked from doing business in the state of New York, The court has appointed a former judge to monitor their assets and any creation of new entities or transfers. Basically... they're on to you!

Qualifications to become Speaker of the House...

Currently, there is a vacancy for the position for Speaker of the House of Representatives. I think Kevin McCarthy was booted out for a bi-partisan effort to stall a government shutdown and that didn't go well with house republicans.
Lots of names came up, but what are the qualifications to become speaker of the house?

D!ck Butkus R.I.P....

Sorry for the word block, but D!ck Butkus, was a linebacker for the Chicago Bears and considered one of the greatest NFL players. It's reported he died in his sleep at age 80.

Butkus was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979. It was an easy pick, because it’s hard to imagine writing the history of the game without Butkus.
