Italy fines Amazon €1.13B for abusing market dominance

In response to: Italy's competition authority slapped a €1.13 billion fine on Amazon for abusing its dominant position in the market and harming competitors in the e-commerce logistics service.

The Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM) said on Thursday that Amazon was giving sellers using its logistics service, called “Fulfillment by Amazon,” advantages in terms of visibility and sales, including access to its “Prime” label. Amazon said it "strongly" disagrees with the AGCM's decision and will appeal.

The large fine comes amid increased antitrust scrutiny of Big Tech worldwide. The European Commission has opened an investigation similar to the Italian one that focuses on the rest of the EU.

“Amazon holds a position of absolute dominance in the Italian market for intermediation services on marketplaces, which has allowed it to favor its own logistics service,” the Italian regulator said in a statement, adding that Amazon’s conduct was “particularly serious.”

The AGCM also imposed behavioral measures, including ordering Amazon to set “fair and non-discriminatory standards” for third-party sellers to get advantages in terms of sales and visibility. A monitoring trustee will review these measures.

The watchdog launched its probe in 2019 over concerns that Amazon was giving sellers using its logistics service a better chance to appear as Amazon’s pick for users searching a product featured in a separate section of its website, the “buy box.” This is a pop-up window that shows customers additional products when they proceed with a purchase.

I can well understand why it is being introduced in Germany, and Greece and Austria for that matter, because of their depressingly low coverage; but I do fear how far they’ll take the policy – and if it will actually have the desired effect.

Even in an emergency, you have to hold on to a sense of what will work. It is about drawing a line. At one end, it seems more than reasonable to require people working in health and care settings to be vaccinated, because it may reduce infection and transmission (to a degree), as it adds to a localised herd immunity effect, and of course the national one.

It’s also fair to ask those entering crowded indoor venues, including bars, theatres and restaurants, to produce evidence of Covid status, such as a documented negative test, and a vaccine certificate: a so-called vaccine passport. No one has a human right to get down at the disco. Germany seems to be extending that to “non-essential shops”, which is pushing it, but with some justification. Reducing contacts reduces infections, after all. At this point in the argument, it is sometimes still asserted that Covid is no worse than the flu and we have to “learn live with it”.

Maybe omicron will prove relatively benign, if more contagious, but we don’t know yet. We need to be cautious because by the time we find out it isn’t nicer than the delta variant, it’ll be too late. Hence the “panic”, which is simply the precautionary principle at work, albeit belatedly.

I’d say the last 20 months have suggested that Covid can be rather worse for more people than flu. It is endemic, but that doesn’t mean it can be ignored. It’s also pointed out that vaccination doesn’t stop anyone catching Covid – or passing it on. That’s only partly correct. The unvaccinated are disproportionately represented on the Covid wards. Vaccines reduce the incidence of the disease – which is why death rates remain lower than in the pre-vaccine period.

According to a recent report, fully vaccinated people can contract and pass on Covid-19 in the home – but at lower rates than unvaccinated people (which comes froma study of Covid-19 transmission between household contacts, led by Imperial College London and the UK Health Security Agency (HSA) and published inThe Lancet Infectious Diseases). On that same basis, there’s a case for requiring people who work in other settings where they come into closer contact with large numbers of people – say, in schools, hospitality or public transport – to also be vaccinated as a condition of employment (with medical exemptions).

Of course, individuals should also be required to wear masks, because they too help to reduce transmission. As with vaccines, the masks are not 100 per cent effective – far from it – but they add to our collective defences, and this is confirmed in another recent UKHSA survey of the evidence, which concludes that: “Overall, the evidence suggests that all face coverings are, to some extent, effective in reducing transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in both healthcare and community settings.”

So, every little helps, and that includes vaccination. In that context, in extreme conditions, it might be reasonable to ask parents to agree to vaccination for older children, provided it is safe to do so – special caution is needed.

It’s true that kids rarely suffer much from Covid, but the older adults they meet certainly do. The evidence in this pandemic of social and educational harm inflicted by sending pupils home from school is also real – so this should really be a very last resort in a pandemic spike and a collapsing NHS. Yet if it saves lives, then it would have to be enforced, as lockdowns have been over these past months.

Antivaccine activists use a government database (VAERS) on side effects to scare the public,

In response to: On 5 May, Fox News host Tucker Carlson delivered a 10-minute monologue casting doubt on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines on his show, Tucker Carlson Tonight. He announced that almost 4000 people had died after getting COVID-19 vaccines, and added that those data "comes from VAERS,"—the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, a U.S. government program that collects reports of side effects possibly caused by vaccines.

It was a misleading statement. The reporting of a death to VAERS indicates nothing about what caused it, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) subsequent investigations have found no indication that deaths were caused by COVID-19 vaccines, save in a small subset with an extremely rare clotting disorder linked to one vaccine. But the TV segment pulled VAERS, a 31-year-old early warning system widely relied on by scientists, even deeper into the culture wars over vaccination. After the broadcast, a new phalanx of antivaccine activists began plumbing VAERS for data to scare the public about vaccination, says Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters for America, a left-leaning nonprofit that is monitoring anti–COVID-19 vaccine activity on social media. "We have been tracking these attacks since February and this one resonated in a different way after Tucker hit it," Carusone says.

It has been distressing to watch for researchers who use VAERS to detect real vaccine side effects—such as the very rare clotting disorder linked to the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine—and to rule out others, thus providing both safety and reassurance to the public. "I can't believe people are using this database now to try to form this antivaccination argument," says Eric Formeister, an ear surgeon at Johns Hopkins University.

Formeister and colleagues turned to VAERS, which is run by CDC and the Food and Drug Administration, after hearing anecdotal reports from patients of sudden hearing loss after COVID-19 vaccination. Their analysis of VAERS data concluded hearing loss was no more frequent, and possibly less frequent, among vaccine recipients than in the population as a whole, as they published in JAMA Otolaryngology last week. CDC is now using VAERS data to probe whether COVID-19 vaccines might rarely be causing heart inflammation in children; it has not yet reached a conclusion.

One of VAERS's strengths—its openness—is also a potential weakness in the politicized COVID-19 era. Anyone who receives a vaccine authorized in the United States can report an adverse event to VAERS, as can doctors, family members, and others. That openness ensures VAERS receives plentiful reports—228,000 for COVID-19 vaccines alone since December 2020, more than four times the number received in all of last year for all vaccines.
Some worry this might make it easy to post false reports. But CDC removes data that are clearly fake, such as a recent report purportedly filed by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro about an adverse event in a beach volleyball superstar. And deliberate, false reporting to VAERS, which is a federal criminal offense, appears to be rare. "We don't have evidence that there is widespread fraud or gaming of the system," says Tom Shimabukuro, deputy director of CDC's Immunization Safety Office, which oversees VAERS. "We have to balance keeping VAERS an open system and getting as much information as we can on vaccine safety against potential data quality problems."

But even honest reports can be used to spook the public. The reports themselves are not vetted, and, as CDC states in a prominent disclaimer, they "may include incomplete, inaccurate, coincidental and unverified information."

In hospital, Covid-19 has largely become a disease of the unvaccinated. The man in his 20s who had always watched what he ate, worked out in the gym, was too healthy to ever catch Covid badly. The 48-year-old who never got round to making the appointment.

The person in their 50s whose friend had side-effects. The woman who wanted to wait for more evidence. The young pregnant lady worried about the effect on her baby.

The 60-year-old, brought to hospital with oxygen saturations of 70% by the ambulance that he initially called for his partner, who had died by the time it arrived; both believed that the drug companies bribed the government to get the vaccine approved.

All severely ill with Covid. All unvaccinated and previously healthy. All completely avoidable.

Of course, there are people who have their vaccinations but still get sick. These people may be elderly or frail, or have underlying health problems. Those with illnesses affecting the immune system, particularly patients who have had chemotherapy for blood cancers, are especially vulnerable. Some unlucky healthy people will also end up on our general wards with Covid after being vaccinated, usually needing a modest amount of oxygen for a few days.

But the story is different on our intensive care unit. Here, the patient population consists of a few vulnerable people with severe underlying health problems and a majority of fit, healthy, younger people unvaccinated by choice. Watching the mix of patients coming in with Covid, it feels to me like hardly anybody has been vaccinated nowadays; of course, this is because the people that have been vaccinated are getting on with their lives at home. If everyone got vaccinated, hospitals would be under much less pressure; this is beyond debate. Your wait for your clinic appointment/operation/diagnostic test/A&E department would be shorter. Your ambulance would arrive sooner. Reports of the pressure on the NHS are not exaggerated, I promise you.

Most of the resources that we are devoting to Covid in hospital are now being spent on the unvaccinated.

Yes, vaccinations are unpleasant. They cause side-effects. They hurt. You may even still catch Covid afterwards. I have many colleagues who have felt awful after vaccination and a few who had to take a day or two off work. However, I have not heard of any who have been hospitalised with Covid afterwards or who have had severe side-effects. The approvals process was incredibly stringent and we now have an unbelievable amount of real-world data that these vaccines work. The science that has been applied here is nothing short of awe-inspiring to me. However, I realise that none of these rational arguments would change the mind of someone who is resolved against having it, although I suppose it may push someone who remains undecided.

Texas Says Over 80% Of September’s Covid Deaths Were Among Unvaccinated

From early September to October 1, vaccinated Texans were 13 times less likely to test positive for Covid-19 and 20 times less likely to die from the coronavirus than their unvaccinated peers, according to a Texas Department of State Health Services study.

Some 81.3% of the nearly 4,500 coronavirus deaths studied over that time period were among unvaccinated people, whereas 13.7% of deaths were tied to fully vaccinated Texans and 5% were among partially vaccinated patients, researchers said.

The gulf between vaccinated and unvaccinated Texans is somewhat larger if data from earlier in the year is included: From mid-January to early October, unvaccinated people made up 85.5% of the state’s total Covid-19 deaths and were 40 times more likely to die.

The study suggested “the proportion of cases and deaths among vaccinated people is expected to rise” as vaccination rates increase, and said effectiveness varies depending on patients’ immune systems or whether their immunity has worn off over time.

Similarly, a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found vaccinated Americans were 11.3 times less likely to die of Covid-19 than unvaccinated people from late June to mid-July, though the vaccines were slightly more effective at stopping infections, hospitalizations and deaths before the virus’ delta variant took root in June.

Understanding Breakthrough Infections Following mRNA SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination

In response to: he current surge in infections with the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant has made it clear to health care workers and the public alike that fully vaccinated people remain at risk for SARS-CoV-2 infections. It is also apparent that breakthrough infections in fully vaccinated people can sometimes be serious. As of October 21, 2021, for example, 35% of the 519 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in Massachusetts had been fully vaccinated. Furthermore, multiple reports have documented that if fully vaccinated individuals do become infected, their viral loads may be as high as the levels seen in unvaccinated individuals. In July 2021, these observations led the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to modify its guidance for fully vaccinated people, advising that those in communities with substantial or high SARS-CoV-2 transmission rates should wear masks indoors regardless of their vaccination status. A wealth of new data has since emerged that is helping to deepen understanding of the frequency, severity, and importance of breakthrough infections in fully vaccinated individuals.

New evidence shows that even though fully vaccinated people remain at risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection, they are substantially less prone to carry SARS-CoV-2 compared with unvaccinated people. A point-prevalence survey of almost 100?000 people conducted in England in June-July 2021 during the height of that country’s spring Delta variant surge found that fully vaccinated people (n?=?55?962) were two-thirds less likely to harbor SARS-CoV-2 compared with unvaccinated people (n?=?15?135), with absolute rates of 0.40% vs 1.21%, respectively. Likewise, in a randomized trial of the mRNA-1273 vaccine (Moderna) vs placebo, vaccinated participants (n?=?14?287) were two-thirds less likely to be asymptomatic carriers than unvaccinated participants (n?=?14?164), with absolute rates of 1.5% vs 3.5%, respectively (estimated vaccine effectiveness against asymptomatic infection, 63.0% [95% CI, 56.6%-68.5%]).

Studies of viral dynamics further suggest that while viral loads in breakthrough infections may be as high in vaccinated individuals as they are in unvaccinated individuals, viral loads in those who are vaccinated decline more rapidly, and the virus that they shed is less likely to be culture-positive than virus shed by unvaccinated individuals. This suggests that people who are fully vaccinated are less likely to become infected and if infected, will be contagious for shorter periods than unvaccinated people. This is supported by transmission studies that confirm that vaccinated people are less likely to transmit SARS-CoV-2 to close contacts compared with unvaccinated people, including the Delta variant. In a study of 7771 household contacts of 4921 index cases in the Netherlands, the rate of transmission from fully vaccinated household members was 13% vs 22% from unvaccinated household members (estimated vaccine effectiveness against transmission, 63% [95% CI, 46%-75%]). Similarly, in an English study of 151?821 contacts of 99?567 index patients, the rate of transmission from people fully vaccinated with BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) was 23% vs 49% for transmission from unvaccinated people (adjusted odds ratio , 0.35 [95% CI, 0.26-0.48] for transmission of Delta to unvaccinated contacts; aOR, 0.10 [95% CI, 0.08-0.13] for transmission of Delta to fully vaccinated contacts).

Apparently we are all living inside a Hollywood fictional movie.

Then there is 5G which apparently, although in limited use, has created and influenced the covid virus, never mind the fact that radio waves have been passing through living bodies since cave man-days, but have now, in the 21st century, decided the time is right to affect humans, just humans mind you, as dogs, cats etc have superior brains obviously.
Never mind the fact that people living in areas where there is no 1G 2G 3G 4G 5G, still get the same ailments as those in large cities where phone signals are rampant.

The French PM has now realised how much his country depended on the UK so rather than negotiate he throws his toys out of the pram.

One has to wonder what will happen to France and Germany when other counties follow the UK's lead and leave the EU?

The premise that someone who lives and worked in China would therefore become indoctrinated in the political arena, fails on many counts.

Firstly, one would need to spend time with those doing the indoctrination, which I never did, in fact, I spent a lot of time working with senior government officials, military and medical staff most of whom show little time for politics or showed a strong dislike for the CCP.

Secondly, to be manipulated one would need to have a mind easily swayed as can be regularly seen here on CS, I have a strong personality not easily swayed or persuaded as my past has taught me to do due diligence and research.

I am politely requesting that the CS member (Bohemund) refrains from continually referring to me as "Comrade" and desist from continuously attempting to belittle me by the constant pejorative comments insinuating I am controlled by the CCP.

I am clearly NOT and have said so many times, I have also posted many disparaging comments regarding the CCP.

Dr Judy Mikovits is a discredited scientist who has been proven to lie and fake research (sacked for a research position for falsifying a report), why anyone would use her as a source of information is mind-boggling.

A simple search online comes up with pages of information from both left and right political bias showing that Mikovits is a discredited scientist using lies to gain financial assistance from the likes of QAnon.

In late 2008, a graduate student, who subsequently was hired by Mikovits as her technician, obtained two positive results from a group of twenty samples. He and Mikovits successively altered the experimental conditions until all samples gave a positive signal.

So a proven liar is yet again used as a means to spread more lies and false information on social media.

Event Triggering this Release: Dr. Richard M. Fleming was sentenced today in Lincoln, Nebraska, by the Honorable Richard G. Kopf to five years probation with six months home detention, including electronic monitoring, and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $107,244.24 for the felony offenses of health care fraud and mail fraud. Fleming pled guilty to those charges on April 23, 2009. Fleming lived in Papillion, Nebraska, at the time of the crimes, and now lives in Reno, Nevada. He is currently licensed to practice medicine in Missouri and Iowa, and as a part of his plea agreement in the case he agreed to a lifetime exclusion from participation in any federally-funded health care benefit program.
A federal grand jury in Nebraska returned an indictment against Fleming on January 18, 2007, charging ten counts of health care fraud and three counts of mail and wire fraud. The health care fraud counts charged Fleming with submitting bills to insurance companies in 2002 for medical procedures, diagnostic heart tests, he had not actually performed. The mail and wire fraud counts charged Fleming with obtaining payment from a North Carolina soy food company in 2004 for product testing work he had not performed, and more specifically charged him with lying about whether he had performed the services he was paid for, and with creating and submitting false documents in order to cover up the fact that he had not done the work for which he had been paid. The case actually went to trial, which began on April 6, 2009, and the jury was deliberating on their verdict when Fleming pled guilty, admitting that he had committed both health care fraud and mail fraud.

Trump Campaign Knew Dominion Fraud Claims Were False, Memo Reportedly Shows.

In response to: The Trump campaign debunked election fraud claims involving Dominion Voting Systems’ voting machines days before Trump allies like attorney Rudy Giuliani started widely promoting those same allegations, court documents discovered by the New York Times show, suggesting the campaign knew the fraud claims were false but let them spread anyway.

According to the documents, released Monday in a state defamation case brought by Dominion’s security director Eric Coomer, the Trump campaign prepared an internal memo on November 14 at deputy communications director Zach Parkinson’s request that debunked multiple fraud allegations involving Dominion.

The campaign memo debunked claims alleging Dominion and its leadership had ties to Venezuela and “left wing ‘antifa’ activists,” and that Dominion had used voting technology from rival voting machine Smartmatic, whose machines were also involved in election fraud claims.

Less than a week later, Giuliani and far-right attorney Sidney Powell, who Giuliani said in a deposition were acting as “active supervisors” of the Trump campaign’s post-election legal challenges, pushed those same fraud claims about Dominion at a televised press conference at the Republican National Committee, in which they falsely alleged widespread election fraud and tied Dominion to Venezuela.

Giuliani said in a deposition cited in the court documents he was unaware of the memo before his press conference and suggested the staffers that prepared it “wanted Trump to lose because they could raise more money,” the Times reports.

The Times reports it is “unclear” whether former President Donald Trump, who has also pushed fraud claims involving Dominion, was aware of the memo, but notes members of the campaign “remained silent” about the allegations as they spread despite knowing they were untrue.

“The memo produced by the Trump campaign shows that, at least internally, the Trump campaign found there was no evidence to support the conspiracy theories regarding Dominion,” Coomer’s attorneys wrote in the court filings, as quoted by the Times, arguing the campaign “continued to allow its agents … to advance debunked conspiracy theories and defame” Coomer, “apparently without providing them with their own research debunking those theories.”

CHIEF CRITIC
Trump allies including Powell, who’s facing multiple defamation lawsuits for her fraud claims, have continued to stand by the fraud allegations despite them being repeatedly debunked and legal challenges involving them failing in court. The far-right attorney has not yet responded to a request for comment, but recently described the purported fraud in the 2020 election as “essentially a bloodless coup where they took over the presidency of the United States without a single shot being fired” in a recent interview with the Australian Broadcasting Company.
