Getting Used to Retirement

Well, that was a waste of time and gas this morning. I was up at 5:15am, made my lunch, heated up some soup, filled my thermos, made breakfast and had a quick cuppa before heading out at 6:45am.

It was clear here, with high clouds and sunny patches, a promise of a sunny fall day. As I drove west, the weather got worse and worse, driving into heavy rain, and clouds that seem to meld with the pavement. Everything was grey, making it hard to see the road and other cars.

Arriving at the turnoff towards the market, I pulled into a store on a side street, and looked up the weather for that area today. Rain. Not rain with sunny periods. Not showers. Not rain and clearing in the afternoon. Just rain. All. Day. Long.

So I turned around and headed home. I've been at the markets when it's raining, and it sucks. People are there to buy their vegetables and they aren't looking to buy anything else. And they sure aren't 'shopping' to see what else is there. Especially if it's raining heavily.

Besides, I figure with my iron count so low, I just can't afford to get chilled and get a cold as I don't have the resources to fight it. I can think of all kinds of excuses. The bottom line, I'm not sitting in the pouring rain for four hours, being bored.

Two and a half hours later, I'm home, back in the nice, dry weather. I think I'll load my bike onto the back of my car and go somewhere today to take some photos. There are two places I know of that have cool old cars and trucks that I want to photograph again.

Guaranteed I won't be heading into the rain though. And yeah, I should have checked the weather forecast for that area yesterday. I checked the forecast for my area, and it was correct - cloudy with sunny periods. Silly me, not checking that area, as it's the reason I haven't lived in that area - it rains too much!

Ah yes, getting my pensions is awesome! Before, I'd have to go to work, whether it was raining or not. Now, as my expenses are all covered, if I don't want to work in the rain, I don't have to. If it had shown signs of clearing up at all today, I would have stayed. But, as it didn't, I now have a day to myself to do as I wish.

Retirement rolling on the floor laughing
I've been retired for eleven years and never have time to just do nothing.
Hello LadyImp wave I was forced into retirement 10 yrs ago due to health issues. Due to the health issues, I was forced to give up some hobbies, (hunting, fishing...) At first retirement was a jolt to the system, but have found keeping busy, doing something, keeps me from getting into trouble of some sort, rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
I know a few people who retired, and got so bored with it, they took up part time jobs, for something to do, to beat the boredom. I ve been telling people who are retiring to make some plans to do something,> part time jobs, travel, help out charities.... do something to save their sanity.
i always check the hourly report on weather.com for the town the market is in the night before and also right before I head out.
Both days this weekend were terrific, as were the sales.
I retired very early and have been loving every moment of it. applause
I have been retired for 9 years and i love it.especially sleeping in.
Emmy - Exactly! So many retired people tell me that. They say, I don't know how I had time to work, because I have no time now. lol. I love being busy, and it's even better when it's something you want to do. applause
Fay - well, whatever your passion is, I'm sure it'll show itself. In the meantime, enjoying the time to yourself is what it's all about. I absolutely love that I could choose not to sit in the rain, hoping someone might buy something, when I know darn well that ppl go and buy their veggies and leave. I've spent too many rainy days like that, and I so loved being able to turn around and come home where the sun was shining for a while. It did start raining later, but I didn't care, I was home. banana
1to1 - that's so true. Staying busy and active keeps one from going stir crazy. thumbs up
