Kitten Rescue

After coming home yesterday morning, opting not to sit in the pouring rain at the market, I edited some photos and puttered around the house as the rain moved this way. Checking on a local fb group, someone had posted a video of some tiny kittens playing under the brambles under the bridge.

The woman that posted the vid said they were under the bridge with the black mother cat, but she didn't have anything to catch them with. Being the cat lover I am, I volunteered to go down there and see if I could capture them with some food. While there, another couple showed up, leaving their kids in the car so they wouldn't make a lot of noise, and the dad crawled under the brambles, and just sat there in hopes that the kittens curiosity would bring them to him.

His wife and I sat at another entrance into the brambles, so if they came our way, we'd be there to get them. We were there about two hours, and the kittens had ventured close enough to B and had actually climbed on his leg. But they weren't all that close, so he wanted to wait until all four of them were close enough. We were just quietly waiting.

Across the street, some van comes zooming up, parks, and some woman strides over as if she's in charge. She starts tramping around the area, talking loudly and going down near B. He keeps motioning her away as she's scaring the kittens, talking quietly to try to get her to quiet down. Nope, she's too full of herself it clue in. So she comes and starts talking to me and J, bragging how she got tuna fish to entice the last cat she caught. Big deal. We had soft cat food.

Anyway, she just didn't get it, and went back down to where B was, and we could see she was determined to crash her way through the brambles to him. She came tramping back to us and said she was getting tuna fish. I lost it at that point. I said we had everything under control, we had soft cat food for them, and we didn't need more people tramping around the area, making noise and scaring them. She said she was only trying to help, and I said she should have asked first, if we needed any. She left in a huff.

She wasn't there to help the kittens particularly, she was there because she figured she'd be the hero in saving these cats, and didn't care that there were already people there looking after the situation. Thank goodness she left. Shortly after she left, the kittens gained enough confidence to all climb onto B and he just scooped them into the cat carrier. Mom was nowhere to be seen at that point.

He came out of the bush with the kittens, leaving the soft cat food on the dish. Mom appeared and just wolfed down the food. We put out the other half of the can, but there was no way she was coming near us. The couple left with the kittens and purchased kitten milk (they're about six weeks old), and took them home, where they seemed to be happily running over the kids and parents.

I went back to see if I could catch Mom, but to no avail. I left more food for her and a bowl of water, seeing as others had said they'd seen her drinking out of a puddle. Today, if the woman that said she has a live trap doesn't show up with it, I'll get a live trap and set it for the mama cat in hopes we can catch her and reunite her with her babies.

Fortunately, where she is, she's dry, as she's directly under the bridge, but it's super noisy there, with the echoing of the traffic overhead constantly. Thunder and lightning yesterday afternoon while I was there probably didn't entice her to come out to eat either. Poor thing is starving and not much older than a kitten herself.

I'm glad the other couple were there to take the kittens home, as Sadie would have been most pissed off if I'd have to bring them here. Hopefully, we'll be able to catch mom cat today.

Aww, as a fellow cat lover, I'm really hoping for a happy ending. head banger
TG - me too! I'm so hoping that we can catch her in a live trap, reunite her with her babies, get her fixed and find them all permanent homes. I heard her meowing for her babies last night, but she wouldn't come out. Hopefully we'll get her today. grin
Careful ! Those kittens are 1/2 bobcat. wow

Just kidding. laugh
I hope you catch the mother, but not the bobcat. grin
Good Morning LadyImp,wave I hope things work out with your cat rescue. (nice of of you for your effort thumbs up ) I put my pooch down a yr ago, and have developed such a soft spot in my heart for all animals, I think its wonderful what you re doing.
I commend you and the other couple. I have a great friend here who does catch and release, I'm so in awe of her for that. She would get the mama cat fixed then release it and she would find homes for the babies. She also does bunnies too.
Jim - haha - good news! We caught Mama at around noon in a live trap. banana
1to1: wave Aw, thanks. I am such a cat lover, I really hate to see any of them turfed into the wild. All my life I've had an affinity to cats, and they to me. I just can't let an animal starve to death. That's beyond cruel.
Glad alls well.meow..
Fay - well a bit of a turn of events here. Unexpected, for sure, but not unwelcome.

We (me and the other woman from the couple), went under the bridge today and set up a live trap for Mama, leaving the kittens in a crate at the end of it. We thought, as I'd fed her earlier, that maybe she would be hard to catch. About 10 minutes or so and I saw the towel over the live cage moving, realizing she was already trapped and eating the can of cat food we'd put in the cage (after already inhaling a can of tuna).

As the other couple only had a garage they could put them in, and needed to clean it out, I offered my art studio to keep them in. So they left a large dog carrier with me, with towels put in the bottom and all four kittens and Mama cat are comfy inside it. The kittens are happily nursing, and Mama has consumed yet another can of cat food.

Mama is so skinny (yes, she let me pet her), it's horrible to feel every bone in her body. She's not much more than a kitten herself, probably only about a year or so old herself. So they have their own room and access to food, water and a litter box. Sadie is ignoring them, which is just as well. She doesn't take to other animals in HER house.

The kittens will be taken to the vet tomorrow by the other woman and all the cats will be going to a shelter by the end of the week. I think some of them have already been spoken for, but that's not my concern. They are safe and warm and in a quiet environment right now, and I'm sure this is like heaven compared to the noise under the bridge.

So - maybe I'll end up fostering cats, although I never thought I would.
It's amazing when Destiny knocks and you get to decide a new route. Fostering is great for both human and animals. Once again I'm impressed.

Having babies around is quite the entertainment as well. Just don't turn into the cat lady. My neighbor has six cats and promises not to get anymore. She loves every one of them, her house always is clean and smells nice, I'm impressed but couldn't do it myself.
Fay - the kittens are adorable and Mama is settling nicely. I doubt I'll be a foster as there's a lot of work with 4 kittens and a skinny Mom. I'm glad I can give them a safe place until the shelter takes them, but I don't want to be tied down doing this on a regular basis. Maybe in the winter, but not when it's nice. The kittens are definitely entertaining though!

Hurray, that you got the momma cat. thumbs up
The bad news is, that you will never see the people again. wave
Those cats are now yours. doh
Sadie will take to catnip. laugh
