The kitten is around 4 months old. The big cat in the picture is pushing 20 lbs (almost 10 kg).

But the big cat would scare me
The dad, who had been acting like a typical aloof male before that, totally took over the care of the pups. And yes, he allowed them to nurse from him too.
Luckily enough, they were old enough to be handfed, so they survived and thrived. But i was amazed at his response at the time.
I had a dog once that had an imaginary pregnacy. She made a nest to have her litter, then she cared for her imaginary pups for awhile then she popped back to normal as if it never happened.
Cool story about the Dad Dog taking over after Momma passed.
They do look cozy though.
