The contrast is more like 50 years ago vs now. People today have more things to do at home, and expect the same from others. "Call first" was a good idea even back then, so at least you wouldn't waste a trip. This left the field to door-to-door hustlers and thieves scoping out the block. R.I.P., Mayberry.
