When will Brits learn to speak English?

Brits can't or wont pronounce the letter R when it is within the body of a
word, well, like WORD they say wohd, or care they say caah. I guess their
stiff upper lip prevents them from forming the mouth to enable them to
pronounce this sound. Here are a few words Brits typically screw up.

conTROVersy They put the accent on the second syllible when it belongs on
the first. What's interesting, is when they utter controversial, they
correctly move the accent to the third syllible. I guess it would sound
like gibberish if they didn't.

Here's a few woRds I've noticed the British seem to love to modify.

AmazIn; When was the O changed to an I?
MarathIn; Same question, When was the O changed to an I?
MiliTRY; What became of the third syllible?
MedsIn; When was the O changed to an I and where is the second syllible?
Da Facto; When did the E become an A?

Regarding the English language, Ooby, it comes from England (Oxford/Cambridge) and the Yanks have corrupted it - not only the pronunciation, but also the grammar and the spelling. grin
is there anything else you want to say/know, laugh

There´s no such thing as "American English" There's the English language, and there are mistakes
Y-all come back now, yaheah!
With a name like
Ubi-dubi wat tha expect?
My precious daughter-in-law is Chinese with her English challenging me to understand but she does so much better than I do Chinese.

The word that was hardest to understand was vinegar. She was saying wine-eh-gah, now I know winegar means vinegar.
Are you kidding ? There's lots of different dialects in the US (however, not as bad as in China).
Have you talked with anyone from the Bronx, Boston, or Mississippi?
Is Ooby a hit-and-run blogger?

Oh well. It's a cheerful blog and therefore hoisting it back to the top to relieve the doom and gloom laugh

My all time favourite.

voilá - It's pronounced vwa-la - It's NOT wal-la. The v is pronounced and again, if you're going to use it, learn how to spell and pronounce it!

I'm an American butcher and never knew it. This is the first I've heard of these correct pronounciations.

However I won't remember it tomorrow and will probably keep on butchering them.
Obby, sorry, love, but I'm not kissing you back, knowing where you came out from... laugh

imp, I checked this with a few online dictionaries and both pronunciations are acceptable.
For me, in terms of design or architecture, I'll say niche. If I'm referencing something a person does well, I'll say they found their nitch in life.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it...
Lots of things become accepted when they are used by enough people.

That doesn't make it right though grin

It used to annoy me in Spain, because they pronounce every letter, a word like beret would be pronounced with the t. Grrr.
That doesn't make it right though

molly, what's your thought on 'cos' instead of because? Does that make the hair on your neck stand on end?

laugh
Thank goodness I have my mom correcting my English pronunciations right until today! roll eyes
