Why Aren’t Democrats Walking Away With the Midterms?

The night Donald Trump was elected was supposed to be, for most liberals and a few conservatives, the beginning of the end of the world. The economy would surely implode. The U.S. would probably blunder into a catastrophic war. The new American president would be blackmailed into conducting foreign policy as Putin’s poodle.

None of that has happened — not yet, at any rate. On Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported the fastest rate of annual wage hikes in almost a decade, depriving Democrats of one of their few strong arguments about the true state of the economy. Unemployment is at its lowest rate since Vince Lombardi coached his last game in December 1969. The North American Free Trade Agreement has been saved with minor modifications and a new name.

Oh, and: The Islamic State is largely defeated. Tehran has not restarted its nuclear programs despite America’s withdrawal from the Iran deal. U.S. sanctions on Russia are still in place. Democrats badly damaged their chances of taking the Senate with their over-reaching and polarizing crusade to stop Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. What more could Trump ask for?

In normal presidencies, good news, along with your opponents’ mistakes, is good politics. It’s your Topic A. In normal presidencies, the politics of cultural anxiety, social division or ethnic scaremongering — that is, of proposing the end of birthright citizenship and demonizing elite media and militarizing the U.S. border — is Plan B. It’s what you turn to first when you don’t have enough to say for yourself otherwise.

But that’s not how the Trump presidency rolls. In this campaign, fear is what’s on the Republican menu. Peace and prosperity? Mere side dishes.

The mystery of Donald Trump is what impels him to overturn the usual rules. Is it a dark sort of cunning or simple defects of character? Because the president’s critics tend to be educated and educated people tend to think that the only kind of smarts worth having is the kind they possess — superior powers of articulation combined with deep stores of knowledge — those critics generally assume the latter. He’s a bigot. He’s a con artist. His followers are dumb. They got lucky last time. They won’t be so lucky again.

Maybe this is even right. But as Trump’s presidency moves forward, it’s no longer smart to think it’s right. There’s more than one type of intelligence. Trump’s is feral. It strikes fast. It knows where to sink the fang into the vein.

This has been Trump’s consistent strength from the moment he entered the Republican race until the second he got wind of the migrant caravan. Yes, his administration doesn’t even have an ambassador in Honduras, and if the U.S. has any kind of coherent Central American policy it would be news to me. Also, the idea of deploying thousands of U.S. troops to repel and even fire on the caravan is repellent, fascistic and probably unlawful.

Still, several thousand people are pushing their way to the U.S. border with the idea that they will find a way to push their way through it. If they do, tens or even hundreds of thousands more will surely follow. It’s perfectly reasonable for fair-minded voters to wonder how the U.S. will vet and then absorb even a fraction of them (though I think we easily can), and what doing so will mean for our wider immigration system.

As of today, the dems have a 6 in 7 chance of taking the House. The republicans only have a 1 in 7 chance of retaining the House. Boo Hoo, huh. crying

Of states with which I'm familiar, this impresses me as being fairly accurate...

The Dems reluctantly admit the economy is doing well, but they give Obama credit for it.

Let's hope the Living have more sense than that, the Republic can't stand much more of the 'Progressive' Agenda without collapsing!

Good one Willy, wave

We'll see Wednesday but the dems are still favored to take the House. I'm interested in some of the senate races. The governors race in GA is an interesting one to watch. That race is close to a dead heat. Senator Cruz in TX appears to be in a very tight contest now with just a slight edge.
Tomorrow, Nov. 6th 2018, is voting day.

I'm not holding my breath either way until it's done. I will say that if this country allows dem majority anything after sensibly kicking them to the curb in 2016; that's why we can't keep any forward movement.
Oh, I know that one. wave

Because, voting isn't over yet. tongue laugh
Willy, let me ask you a question.
The Republican party controls the House of Representatives, the Senate, The White House and a majority of the Supreme Court.

Do you believe it's a good idea for one party to have total control of every branch of government?
Oobs, if you want anything done in Washington you have to have a working government and with different sectors controlled by different ideologies that cannot happen.
So by that I take it as a yes? You like for the country to be controlled by one party right? As long as it's your party is that what you think? Look what happened in Germany in the late 30's when the National Socialist Party gained total control. They sure got a lot done I'll give you that!
Ooby,go back to the Drawing-Board,you really don't know what you are talking about!
The Dems are going to smash the inbreeding deplorables.

One thing I noticed at Trumps Rallies were the majority of deplorables had two teeth in their bloody head giggle
daears
Politics doesn't help our planet dunno So what are most leaving behind for thier children - grandchildren dunno. I'm so glad I don't have children.
so,Ooby,to you SCOTUS is just another Branch of the Legislative?

Kudos, conrad, mic, british!thumbs up
It's looking like the Donald will have to work with a new Speaker of the House. I'm not sure he worked with the previous one. laugh
The Dems have smashed the Republicans in the house.

Come on bring on that impeachment and make Trump hand over he's tax returns.

I can't stop laughing giggle
we are doomed , the animals are taking over

This is the end, beautiful friend
This is the end, my only friend
The end of our elaborate plans
The end of ev'rything that stands
The end
No safety or surprise
The end
I'll never look into your eyes again
Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need of
some strangers hand
In a desperate land
Lost in a Roman wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain
There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the king's highway
Weird scenes inside the goldmine
Ride the highway West baby
Ride the snake
Ride the snake
To the lake
To the lake
The ancient lake baby
The snake is long
Seven miles
Ride the snake
He's old
And his skin is cold
The west is the best
The west is the best

Hey Willy, Guess what. The Dems broke up your precious monopoly.laugh
no Ooby,they didn't!
Seems you haven't done your Homework again!
Let's see how the Dems treat their new found positions in the House. Will they work with the President, or will they self destruct in their rush to obstruct ? That is the question.
Hey draegoneer, it looks like your home state of Michigan just elected a Democrat Governor.rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

Don't know who is more laughable Willy? Scooby hasn't looked at the results or considered the long term implications. And the car lady, well she's just a parrot who has never been let out of her cage.

President Trump just keeps beating the odds. Soon enough it will be apparent even to the drones......small minds.

cool
even that Gorilla knows better than some Americans!
laugh

grin
Ever wondered why the odds are against Trump? Is it because everyone except idiots can see him for what he is?

Why is America the laughing stock of the entire world if Trump is such a wonderful leader?

It is not just Democrats who dislike Trump, most of the world leaders except for Russia and NK think he is a moron, and that has to mean the man is not a true President, Even though Obama was not liked by China, the Chinese still thought he was a good man at heart.
There have been many bad Presidents of the USA, but none have caused America to be the butt of so many jokes, not even Ford!
You may want to think about that.

"so,Ooby,to you SCOTUS is just another Branch of the Legislative?"

That seems to be what it is becoming thanks to the former talk show host who only picks hard right judges like Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, and the barefaced enabling of that Turkeyneck from Kentucky, Mitch McConnell who shamelessly blocked Obama's appointment of Merrick Garland to the SCOTUS

You are so in love with Donald Trump you can't see it, or you can but would never admit it. Or are you afraid you might get fired too?confused
Ooby,I suspect you were playing Hookey from School when they were teaching Civics!laugh
Your grasp on that subject is atrocious!
Chapter 7 of the "Debaters handbook"; If you have nothing to say, attack your opponent! You're a master of the art of evading a debate by attacking an opponent conrad. It's a very well worn tactic.yawn
No ooby, it doesn't hurt a bit. I stated a long time ago in another thread that dems would be voted in for my state.

People are too stupid to keep moving forward so the trends show they keep voting themselves backwards again as soon as things take an upswing.

Then they'll wonder why things take a downward slope and try doing the opposites again. Michigan has always gone downhill with dems in charge. When michigan was motor capital of the world, most didn't care about taxation and regulation as much. Too bad no one thought about when it went away.

Republican types manage to get things up again and the state cuts it's throat until things are almost too far south and again, back to repubs(or acting ones). I've been watching it for years.
Gained even stronger control of the senate. That will help keep the house of demoncraps in check.

Not really much of a blue wave when they still have trumps above them in at least two forms.grin

I hope states realize they have recall rights. It's only been used a couple of times in a couple of states in the past 8 years or so. When they get tired of the circus in the house, they can recall the demoncraps and try again with more competent and nation oriented representatives.

Time to grow up ooby
well,Ooby, there is nothing you have to bring to a Debate, save a few shopworn Left-Paroles,and a lot of dis-information about the US Constitution!
And a lot of misplaced anger!

We have the Courts, we have the Senate...and we have a President that fights back. Trump will continue to pack the lower courts such that most cases wont even reach SCOTUS. The earliest the Senate could possibly be up for grabs by the Demos is 2026. Judging by the current fracture that exists in the Democratic party, I suspect they will have trouble waging war on two fronts.... within and without. Odds have Trump fulfilling another campaign promise....to keep winning.
