What is a Soul?

It cannot be seen or measured and there are no scientific instruments that can observe it. So how do we know we have a soul? Well we’ve been told so, that’s how. But is there anything about the soul that we can work out for ourselves?

Well a soul can’t be the same thing as consciousness because our consciousness can undergo changes that a soul cannot; or at least I presume it cannot. Is a soul susceptible to dementia, or the same kind of changes that the consciousness might face after a brain injury? If so, it seems a depressing thought that the soul could spend eternity in that state. Although I can’t say it with certainty, I’m going to conclude that the soul is not the same thing as consciousness.

Is it safe to assume that consciousness ceases to be after death? Consciousness certainly seems to be very dependent on brain function so it probably is safe to assume that it vanishes when the brain stops functioning. Consciousness, then, must be purely a mortal phenomenon, while the soul, it is said, is immortal. We can now then say that only the soul is subject to anything that might happen after physical death, and that consciousness will not be involved.

But what is the connection between consciousness and soul? Well we know that the soul will be held responsible for the choices we consciously make so our soul must be constantly influencing us, even though we don’t seem to have any insight into its process of doing so. It would seem as though we are merely vehicles being driven by our souls.

When I think about what the entity me actually is, obviously my physical body plays a part in my concept of self identity, but primarily I am thinking of my attitudes and opinions, my likes and dislikes, my emotions and what gives rise them, my memories; my personality and character. Are all these things mirrored in my soul? If so, I can’t imagine what the reason for this duplication might be. In the light of the conclusions I have already come to, I can’t seem to avoid the further conclusion that my soul and I are two separate entities that have an intimate coexistence but will, at some point, go our separate ways. This controlling thing I call the soul may well be accountable for its actions once we have parted company, but, during our coexistence, it seems to consider itself completely unanswerable to me.

While I might not have fully answered the original question, ‘what is a soul’, I have come up with perhaps a more pertinent question; why should I give a toss what happens to it after it has left its mortal coil?

I ssupose it''s what it mean''s to you, personally, dont think it exists.
Please talk among yourselves while stringman finds the 3 hour video

Like pirate Pete said
" aeeeerrrgghhh... a soul to be sure "
you're asking something to be left undone
Hello Donal. I don't think it exists either; I'm just pretending I do for the sake of the blog. That's just between you and me, btw.
Hmmm...A bit deep thinking for you Herbie on Monday night isn't it? dunno

Like you said..why should you care about what happens to your soul ?
Yeah..let's wait for Mr String shall we?
I'd forgotten about string, Crest. Oh dear, what have I done? uh oh
I used to believe everyone had a soul, but now I believe they are few and far between and most people are simply alive until they are dead. Which is what most people want, so that's a good thing.
Am I, methuzelah? confused
I believe we all have a soul.
And...btw...some people are born soulless.
I do have a personal opinion as to what a soul means Harbal. When I feel the spirit around me and inside of me, it defines the very peaceful representation of my existence. You can't touch it nor can you see nor explain it. You just have to feel and trust that it is there with you. Like the first post said, it is very personal and no need to have it shared to anyone unless he or she is a part of you. I wrote a lot of poem representing the sacred existence of my being where it it can only be grasped by whom I share that connection.

Wiki has a very good definition which says: "The spiritual or immaterial part of a human being and or animal. Also regarded as immortal."
Yes, daniela, that is what I'm asking. I wonder how long the video will be. doh
Eternal oblivion is very trendy, Biff.
Do you have any interesting information about it that you could share, Bluesky?
I dunno what a soul is, if I have one, or where I would find it, but I hear I can sell it on Craigslist.
This ought to start things off Stringman:

Only 11 hours 41 minutes (for part one) (of six)
You seem to have an insight that I do not, Lindsy.
Well hold out for a good price, BadlyDrawn.
Harbal, you got it down to a teagrin
Probably Harbal, and you are not the only one. As a matter of fact there is no requirement to believe and or feel the presence of a soul, it is an acquired personal belief. Try to read Shamanism, and or the topics that regard the presence of the higher Spirit, then you will be closer to understanding and or acquiring the insight should you want to dig deeper.
I don't know which is worse, Still_notaDoctor, the Bible or that unbearable voice reading it.
Well Herbie...you started the ball rolling...
Maybe you should refer people to the Existence blog..then the Truth one?dunno

Everybody will have their own truth...then you'll have to ask to define and confirm Existence.
I don't trust any book that's 12 hours long, that doesn't have one joke.
Thank you, Lindsy, but this blog is as far as I intend to take my inquiry.
Hello there Daniela, both the truth and existence are not debatable to establish its universal meaning. In court and or our argument, there has to be a substantial and proof of both the truth and existence, otherwise it is all a lie. For instance, you can't say I don't exist to someone you are with and can physically touch you, and neither can you say to court, that is my truth without truly building up or producing the validity of your truth and proven by the court of law. While, soul is a very personal one. You can't impose or put a ruling on believing that there is or there is no soul. It is not contestable so to speak and there is no need to.

Where as Truth and Existence are to be proven and has to be verified. Subject to the ramifications of law specially if it establishes one's credibility.
we all have a soul whether we want to believe it or not. our soul belongs to GOD. when we die your soul is returned to him.from dust you came and to dust you will return.
I understand Harbal, you don't need to do anything you don't want to do.
What a pity Herbie..
LJ suggested you look into Shamanism...well..
You know where to find me?
I have my opinion but i will not write it, here.
Now Mr Stringman...
Can you prove what you just said?

How do you know it to be true? uh oh
Daniela, I was going to create a blog about "State of altered consciousness" which presents the realms of many dimensions but I put a hold into it then this blog came along. You and I if I am not mistaken are a bit into that level of understanding things far beyond our physical grasp and I am feeling your presence even as we haven't physically met. That is the power of having a spiritual connection so to speak. We are all connected within that realm but I am sure so many chose to ignore and or refuse to be accommodated by its power.
So have I Marlin...and I won't either or my comments might end up being deleted.grin
Thanks, string, I appreciate you giving me your opinion. thumbs up
the bible tells me so it is the word of GOD and GOD does not lie.
Hi Lindsy..wave

Why don't you write that blog about altered states of consciousness?
I'm sure Marlin would also participate.

Herb talks about consciousness...
We could take it a step further to the Collective Consciousness.?
In that case, marlin, I will just have to accept your opinion without seeing any evidence of its existence.
As I was saying Daniela, I was so committed to do it this morning but I am reading two books right now and one of them is Shamanism. You remember Serendipity, right? And also the book Many Lives, Many Masters, which I suggested to Marlin (I am wondering if you had a chance to read it Marlin), I am so compelled to understand the universal connection of these religion and or beliefs with so many existing beliefs from around the world. But I am still reading it. Meantime, Dolores Claiborne book is almost finished and I might just start it soon.
If one had never been indoctrinated by any form of religion, would one believe therei s more to one than the physical being?
Lindsy...I was trained in shamanism and shamanic healing techniques.
I also have Brian Weiss' books as well as other similar ones

But...I read them a few years ago... and...well...uh oh grin
