Curious as to Your response

The video speaks for itself with a educator that 'seems' to snapped.

Put yourself in a position of authority for a moment and take into consideration that this is one of Cape Town's top school for girls..
What would you have done?

In my opinion this is not about race, but more of who is responsible to teach discipline - Parents or Educators?
JMO.

Who is responsible to teach discipline? Parents!
Discipline must be built since we're a baby.

imho.

Parents are failing miserably in their job and responsibilities in raising their kid well.

How could they expect teachers at school to discipline their child? A teacher that has to handle a class of what? 30...40 students?? Also, the teacher only spent like what? An hour or less with your child?

When my kids were young, I was aware of all these and took it upon myself to discipline them at home so that they’d not be a burden to the teachers and a menace to the society when they grow up.

Hi Luke grin
Molly

What if it was the student who strike first? Can the teacher hit her back then? In self-defence?
No.
It would be very uncommon anyway. People still tend to have respect for teachers and authority in general here.
You could of course restrain somebody if they go to hit you. But hitting back would not be a good option.
I think students nowadays tend to be more aggressive.

Not easy to be a teacher/educator sigh help
Mimi, things are also captured on video more nowadays laugh
But yes, it is definitely a difficult profession. Generally the state tends to side with the students rather than protecting the teachers.
Having said that, people are still flocking to it as a profession, so it hasn't put them off.
Think I’ll just be a school janitor grin

MiMi hasn’t got the brains or education to be a teacher anyhow laugh
You haven't half ... roll eyes
Hi Lukewave
It is a responsibilty of a parent to descipline the child from a very early age..

But having said that i also believe that teachers, generally, are allowed to discipline students eg.in a Boarding school. I do not believe physical punishment should be allowed in schools, however, teachers do require to maintain the ability to discipline students in other ways.

As children age they endeavor to push for independence and freedoms that are not in line with learning and a pedagogia can not maintain a congruous learning environment without having some type of control over the classroom setting.

Hi Kal,
Agree with your humble opinion 100%

Hi Mimi,
Yes they are. I can however say that the Chinese culture and MINDSET is totally different to South Africans. I was married to a Chinese lady at one stage and also met MANY others. They tend to be cool calm and collected most times.

Molly,
The teacher gave the pupil instructions to call the Principal and then told her to leave the class. The pupil chose to backchat her then swear at her then to ram the desk into the educators torso. Yes agreed the teacher should not have retaliated but what would that have done to her authority in class after? Most of the 'difficult' or stronger pupils would have walked all over her after that. I think 'reaction' time is/was 2 seconds? Thats reacting without thinking. Not sure.
This is just my opinion which I'm sure is not in line with today's ways of doing things.

Ele,
Yes, apparently the senior girls took part in a protest after school reiterating that race has nothing to do with this but that the pupil in question is a trouble maker with no discipline.
As far as I understand is that both have been suspended and both have laid charges of assault? at the police station.

Thanks for the input.
What happened with the teacher slapping the student was wrong, scold and then again, in my eyes that wasn t a student. A student is there to learn, not to be disruptive towards the teacher, and class. That so called student should have been kicked out of school, with no grades, education.... let her have that accompany her into life. These days ,don t parents teach their kids how important education is, confused Phones in schools, work places, .... and oh yes behind the wheel of vehicles is a big problem these days, doh As for disruptive kids in school, (phones, behavior ....) I d just fail them, and send them home, maybe then the parents could do a better job disciplining them. Then the students who are there to learn won t be distracted.
As you can tell, I get wound up when it comes to the topic of cell phones, very mad , two yrs ago I had two accidents with my car because of texting drivers.
This crime was only a 40 year sentence when it should have been a 120 year sentence.

Clearly this was a failure of the parents. A failure to say no to having children.

Watch the video again, Luke.

The teacher set the tone for the desk shoving.

The student shoved the desk back.

The student 'back-chatted', or swore (I'll have to take your word for that, I can't hear her much quieter voice) because she was under attack.
