Android 9 update...

Yesterday, my cellphone carrier pushed through another update, from OREO, Android 8 to their current version PIE, Android 9.

Maybe you're familiar with some of their previous versions... they all have to do with something sweet. Names like Donut, Eclair, Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich, Marsmallow.
Typically, when a new version is available, Google will release a BETA version that goes out to select groups for field testing. After the bugs are worked out (notice things with sugar often attract bugs) they release them to the carriers who decide what to remove or add to the 'Pure Google' version to the (slightly) altered version that's installed in your Android device.

It wasn't broke, so why are you fixing it? I asked that to a technician and his response was not all phones running Android react the same way. When a new release gets installed they are already working on 'patches' to fix problems not encountered in previous releases or to resolve issues with different models. One (major) flaw is that applications (APPS) must be updated so they can work with new operating systems.

This is the way things are. Implement a new O/S and spend months updating apps to correctly work under it.

Back to the update...
I first noticed the icons have changed appearance. The top row of clock, battery power, Bluetooth messages got moved around a little. Many of the screen backgrounds are (battery draining) white. When will they learn? I had to put the phone in night-mode to get a black background. Text message banner now uses 40% of the screen to tell me I have no new messages. Colored dots appear in front of all my contacts. I haven't checked to see if they actually have meaning or just random colors. I could do without the dots.

The biggest drawback for me is connecting everything to 'clouds' and social media. I don't want to share what's on my phone with the world. Every time I open a photo viewer I'm being asked to sync (synchronize) my photos somewhere else (group messaging and friends list, etc.) and tag locations with story lines. Thanks, but no and I'd like not to have to decline every time I open the app.

It would be nice to see a menu option 'don't bother me' as I don't want to update all my apps monthly because some new data sharing service becomes available.

Category is Technology but the new update is leaning to lifestyle.

More later...

A burner is an inexpensive mobile phone that is designed for temporary use, after which it may be discarded. Burners are purchased with prepaid minutes and without a contract

A week using Android Pie and reading some of the changes is like 3 steps forward and 2 steps back.
There are several nag screens wanting me to update to take advantage of the newest features. The email app update gets HORRIBLE reviews. I'm not inclined to update. Every time I open the photo gallery app, I'm asked to update. No... I'm happy with the current version and haven't found a way to turn off the nag request.
Even so many times you should update the operating systems. Everything works much better with stable released versions. But you do what you think is right. Most Android phones depend on what Carrier gets the new OS update operating system first. Unless you have a Flagship phone that year of new systems. One thing I see a lot in Andriod is that the software apps that r pre-installed are always updating. As for Apple iOS you wait for updates. But the apps from the store get up-dates also. Kal, there are many 'bad apps' that get through the testing of Google Play store.
I only install ones I actually need and it appears everyone wants you to download theirs.

Apps to order food from a dozen different places and have it waiting for you when you arrive... connected to your debit/credit card. Thanks, but no thanks.
My email app was nagging me to update. I didn't. Then, it locked me out waiting for an answer to a questionnaire if I liked the app or not.

very mad
I wonder are landline phones outdated. they seem to be safer and no microwaves causing health concerns. of course, a cell is good if you are on the go a lot or on the road a lot. for me, I could live without a cell.dunno
String, there may be a small percentage of 'wired' land lines in homes without internet support but all the others have been converted to VOIP.
I have Vonage that the phone connects to internet that can easily be moved to any internet connection keeping the same number.
I am living very well without a cell. thumbs up
No stress, no annoyances, no updates. applause
CHAT I don't think I would have a problem switching back to a landline. the people I am with a company that carries all three tv.internet and phone. something I have to think about.

CamScanner, a popular app used to scan PDF documents, was reportedly spreading malware. The app has been around since 2010, and it's been downloaded more than 100 million times. As the Russian antivirus firm Kaspersky discovered, the app recently began spreading malware on Android devices. Google has since pulled CamScanner from the Google Play Store.laugh
