DECLINE OF UNIONS IN AMERICA

The Trump economy.

Jobs for America caused by the boost in workforce and a booming economy is cause for the decline in unions in America. No more union dues. More take home pay for workers. Who needs unions when we have a president like Donald Trump. Trump's speech in Orlando and the following he got proves America is behind him 100%.

Foreign auto makers in the US are all non union. The latest being Volkswagen in Tennessee. Who needs them? This is a trend. Bye bye union thugs. Nice knowin' ya.

Jobs flourishing. Unemployment lowest in years. No more need for unions.

A union is only as good as the people involved and ff there's no good faith there's little point in a union. This isn't Scandinavia, or 1952 and not everybody is a teacher or other professional humanitarian.

It sure would be nice if we could have an intelligent discussion about the economy or the job market or anything about life in general, without including the swamp creature in the WH. I guess it just isn't possible for Republicans to discuss anything without bringing Trump into the picture.dunno

I worked at another union factory also in Queens NY called Welbilt Stoves. My brother got me the job. $1.06 an hour. Do the math, that works out to $42.40 a week. After you're there a while, and you're lucky, you might get to do what they call "Piece Work" meaning you get paid by the piece instead of by the hour. The problem with this scheme though is the number of pieces per hour you have to produce in order to make the higher rate is virtually unattainable unless you work yourself to death. Another way they trick you when it looks like you might be reaching the high dollar rate is they slow down the conveyor belt on the assembly line. Or they drag their feet supplying you with critical parts. I quit that job after about a month when it dawned on me that the union was working more for the company than for the employees. super
"I think unions had outlived their usefulness years ago."

So do I. They were a necessity from the Gilded Age and into early 20th century, to protect laborers from truly appalling and dangerous conditions. That's why we have a 40-hour work week now, instead of 60 hours previously. But the unions got greedy after WWII. One silly practice was "feather-bedding," which was to continue paying members for jobs that were obsolete. One of the glaring examples we heard all thru the '50s was the position of Fireman in the railroads. The fireman's job was to shovel coal from the tinder into the furnace of the locomotive, to boil water and make steam power. By 1958, only diesel locomotives were being manufactured, so what did a fireman do? Drink? Play cards? Tell jokes? Read comic-books? Who knows?

Lots of union jobs paid rather well. But rather than save money for inevitable bad times, too many workers bought into the status-seeking affluence game -- and lost.
