U.S. Coast Guard Leaps Aboard Moving Narco-Submarine in Dramatic Drug Bust
The video shows members of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Munro first screaming imperceptibly at an unidentified moving object in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Then, as the Coast Guard nears the half-submerged moving vessel two of its team can be seen as jumping onto the top of what is now clearly a submarine.
Driving the cocaine-filled vessel were five suspected drug smugglers.
These self-propelled drug-smuggling submarines are nicknamed "narco-subs" and have been known to be used by cartels and traffickers for smuggling drugs across borders.
This operation took place on June 18 and intercepted one of 14 drug-smuggling vessels off the coasts of Mexico and Central and South America. The Cutter Munro is one of three vessels to have made the interceptions between May and June of this year.
