Indeed, there is some evidence, early in the formation of the solar system, that mercury and the earth had a partial impact which wiped the surface layer off of mercury.
Eventually, our sun will supernova and kill all life on earth if our orbit stays the same. Perhaps by then, millions of years down the road, we will figure out a way to steer our planet into an orbit of a different star (i.e. capture massive amounts of energy from the sun prior to the supernova event and translate that into well calculated propulsion). Perhaps we will figure out a way to steer asteroids in a different direction in the meantime. An early push in the direction of a larger planet (more gravitation there) might do it. Or perhaps we can alter it's path to enable the earth to capture it as a small moon and thus an added shield. Splitting the asteroid in ~ half with both halves going in different direactions away from earth might work too.
