Time To Consider Lockdown Possibly ‘A Colossal Public Policy Calamity’

Earlier this week, Fox News’ Brit Hume suggested it’s time we consider lockdown policy as possibly being “a colossal public policy calamity.”

Speaking to Shannon Bream on Fox airwaves Tuesday night, Hume discussed the disastrous side effects of stay-at-home orders adopted by nearly every state in the union, highlighting the irreparable harm done to the folks’ livelihood and savings, and the social toll the isolation has caused, particularly for children, who are at extremely low risk for novel coronavirus.

To boot, emphasized Hume, it’s unclear how effective lockdown policies have actually been, especially when compared to other, more sustainable mitigation strategies.

“I think it’s time to consider the possibility, Shannon, that this lockdown – as opposed to the more moderate mitigation efforts – is a colossal public policy calamity,” Hume said, according to Fox News. “That the damage to the economy, businesses that I see, businesses are closing. Many may not reopen. Those jobs will be lost. Those businesses will be lost. Those incomes will be lost.”

“Plus, the effect on children who don’t have their normal life,” he continued. “They don’t have school. They can’t play with their friends, even outdoors. All these things are accumulating. They’re not going to get better, Shannon. They’re going to get worse with time. And, as I say, we may not recover from many of these losses for a very long time if ever.”

Hume argued that America needs to move forward with sustainable mitigation factors. “What they’re talking about is moving forward, ending the lockdown, allowing people to continue to take the measures of avoiding crowds, washing your hands a lot, social distancing wherever possible — you can do that in offices, you can stagger the way people come to work. Some people stay home some days. Some people come in. There’s an awful lot that could be done. Wearing masks when indoors, particularly in stores and so on.” he said, adding, “Those things are all reasonable precautions and it seems to me we have the experience of suggesting that they work.”

Protesters have a real gripe when it comes to “draconian lockdown” measures, Hume said, noting that it’s frustrating some of the protesters were “not observing social distancing and, in many cases, not wearing masks. But, that aside: these protesters have a just cause.”

COVID-19 is “a major health challenge,” he said. “It is a major health crisis. It is also now a major economic and financial crisis.”

Unemployment claims released from the Department of Labor on Thursday ticked up 4.4 million Americans, tallying up to over 26 million people out of work as the result of our policy response to coronavirus.

“The number of weekly claims is a rough, rolling indicator of the severe economic toll lockdowns and the coronavirus is taking on the United States,” The Daily Wire reported, noting, “Gallup released a poll on Wednesday that found Americans’ fear of losing their jobs in the next 12 months had hit the highest mark on record dating back to 1975. A quarter of U.S. adults responded to Gallup’s survey, taken between April 1-14, that they thought they would lose their job in the next year.”

People who can afford to stay home are doing so and will continue to do so, no matter what trump says, until there’s a vaccine or a treatment so effective that treatment with it gives one a 95-99% survival rate—or until we run out of money. No one is MAKING us not go out. We are not, as the GOP donors think, expendable—nor are we dying to work to make GOP donors richer so they can use their wealth to further subvert our democracy.

MAGAs wanted to tear our country’s government down and burn it all up. Well, it’s not so fun when it’s happening TO you instead of because of you, is it?

I say, when my cows stop giving milk, I worm them and feed them and breed them and take great care of them until they give milk again. The GOP donors do not treat the workers even as well as a dairy man treats his cows, AND YET, WE made/make them rich. We buy their products off which they make their fortunes. We power the entire economic food chain at the top of which the wealthy sit—preying upon all the workers and disposing of us when they work our bodies until they break. Then they cast us aside to live in poverty because they broke us so bad we can’t work. Then they steal the social security we paid into all our lives because they are possessed of bottomless greed—and because they have bribed and bought our Senate and poisoned the SCOTUS so no one regards them as legitimate interpreters of the constitution and existing law any longer—and so they can get away with polluting OUR water, soil and air and even our food—for their profit alone.

f*ck the wealthy. f*ck the GOP. f*ck the religious zealots trying to control us, trying to force women to have babies to feed to their corporate machines. You wanna tear it all down, burn it all up? You never were very good at considering the unintended consequences of your power drunk tantrums...
Well, Willy isn't really one of the ones profiting from the GOP.
He's just fully unwittingly duped by it, so that their leaders can profit off of it.
Yes, Jim, I get that. More’s the pity that he does not.
Poor Willy, he forgot that Trump said we could have a million or more die with out social distancing.
Countries all over the world are taking measures to control this plague- if Trump can't protect our great Nation he should step down and go to back to Mar-a -lego or whatever he calls that thing.doh
The original reason for lockdown was not to wait until the virus disappeared, but rather to flatten the curve so hospitals weren't overwhelmed. Some may prefer to stay at home and cry in the foetal position (and it's their right to do so) until it's completely safe (HINT: life is NEVER completely safe) but most people want things to get back up and running in a responsible way. The virus will likely be around for a good while. The effects of the lockdown have already meant a likely worldwide depression and the longer we stay locked down the worse that will be. Job losses, huge spike in suicides, heart conditions, substance abuse. Some people need to take their head out of their áss and realise this virus isn't the only thing that can kill you. But also, it's increasingly looking like the virus isn't as deadly as initially feared. The true fatality rate is likely under 1%(and I'd guess even under 0.5%). So responsible reopening is the way.
Well said chancer it is the hospitals that need protecting and all the staff in them that keep them open.

As i see it this work force seeing so many deaths when they could not help, will have a devastating affect for the rest of their lives, so moaners and complainers THINK ON.
Most everyone knew and politicians have said repeatedly the goal is to flatten the curve and then end the lock down. Its interesting if you look back ,and even now, how many right wingers or Russian trolls have screamed to end the lock down now. Even Trump said if you do that it will cost millions of lives. Of course he changes his story daily about everything so dunno

The 1/2 % mortality prediction is interesting. I hope it doesn't wind up like your predictions about"Q". .giggle

The death tole is currently 50,000 in several months and counting.
The poorer you get the less you gain from delaying the inevitable. The time to make the best arrangements works when you actually have something to arrange.
fox "news"... lol
well Rapha it will be so

he forgot that Trump said we could have a million or more die with out social distancing.

If the US had all got behind a lockdown it would be near over , petty point scoring from the left and the right have left you all in a bad place .

Good points, C. I'd add one more. Over sized, debt inducing, federal bailout program. Mostly aimed at the corrupt and poorly managed, mostly minority, all Democrat and statist, US state non-governments. Paper pusher jobs, and over kill benefits, pay and pensions,--- all unsustainable. Democrat mantra---never wast a crisis.
for the love of God or not.
