Time

For quite a long time I have had an intuitive feeling that there is no such thing as time. Yet I can’t even say that without recruiting the concept of time to help me in the denial of its own existence. My intuition tells me that what we call the past, the present and the future, all exist simultaneously and perpetually. Every object and every event that ever was, is or will be, just is, constantly. But how we experience that as the linear process we call time is a complete mystery to me.

Do we each have one consciousness that steadily progresses through this strange, static landscape, experiencing it as the passing of time, while in reality it is only our consciousness that is passing? Well not really, because that would mean our consciousness would be travelling in time. Do we then have infinite consciounesses, each experiencing one unit of existence? If so, how are all these separate perceptions joined together to form our overall perception of now? And could there even possibly be such a thing as a unit of existence?

As I am writing this blog, am I also only just being born, while simultaneously experiencing my terminal heart attack? Am I still a single cell organism? None of this stacks up, something is going on. Do the scientists know the truth, but are keeping it secret? Does the government know what is going on, but not telling us? Do I have to turn to Youtube for answers?

Nobody knows, of course, and perhaps nobody ever will. Maybe the limits of our perception lock us into a subjectivity that is simply impossible to escape. Still, such matters are useful for occupying our minds while we lay in bed waiting to drift off to sleep, which I am probably doing at this very moment in some unit of existence or other.

I disagree
You always gave time to write your daily blog
And spend time answering each and every comment in a way that in MHO shows you have time to spare

Perhaps Dr Who can explain it to your satisfaction
wink
Actually, Blue, I think I was wasting my time writing this blog when I could have been spending it complaining about something. sigh
It is food for thought. banana
Be careful how much of it you eat, Amicable, too much is liable to give your mind indigestion. smile wine
Your always complaining
Mix it up a little

rolling on the floor laughing
There's a time for mixing, and there's a time for letting things settle, Blue.
Seems to me someone has a secret love roll eyes

Though its been said ..... nope nope, its neither me nor mine scold scold snooty

kiss kiss kiss smitten

I'll think about it, gg. hmmm
We are looking for theories about time, Celtic, idea not theories of love. scold

Save those for a dating site. doh
Wow..did you really write this blog Herbie?
Or...did you get a sudden flash of inspiration?confused

Or...maybe you got brainwashed? uh oh

Do you really want to debate this topic and want all your questions answered?...I doubt it! grin
Theories about time?

As I've said many times...Time and Space are a human concept.
Isn't every single thought in our heads a human concept, Daniela? dunno
Every thought ..a human concept?

Yes..of course!
But..be careful what you think as it echoes throughout of eternity.

GG...I haven't had a watch since I've been in Spain..20 years now.

At first It was a matter of convenience with the outdoor lifestyle that I am enjoying here.

But...over the years I've found that it isn't at all needed as I learned to tell the time from the shadows.

Also...there's always somebody..somewhere who are eager to tell you!

A good example: if you happen to be late for an appointment, or phoning a person at an inconvenient time..they will remind you of it by saying: "do YOU realise what time it is?!!!"

Morning Hwave

I've pondered this blog since it was posted and yet am still searching for some intelligent comment to define time.

Is it finite or infinite? How many occasions have we said " I haven't got time". Is this a logical answer ? Of course it's not, but we still use the terminology to pass off not doing a particular task or joining in an event etc. Our past is behind us and we cannot go back, and our future lies ahead so we must progress forward as we are not able to stand still in time.

For me each new day is a new beginning to use my time in the best way I can, to try to embrace the life I have and value every second given to me. The expression time waits for no man means that some things are inevitable, such as birth, death, the sun rising in the morning, and the passage of time. No man can control such inevitable natural phenomena or facts of life.

I have a limited time left on this earth and will hopefully appreciate everything that comes my way in the hope that it is for my good and not a disaster ,so for me time is precious.

Hope you can understand my train of thought.hug
Is there no way to get in touch with the computer woman, gg? I'm sure it is possible to service a computer without breaching the social distancing regulations.
What exactly does that mean, Daniela?

And how is it possible to know what happens in an eternity?

Is it even possible to be careful about what we think? We don't really know what we are going to think beforehand, and by the time we do know, it is too late to do anything about it. confused
Please don't ever refrain from posting on my blogs because of the lack of an intelligent comment, spitz. If intelligent comments were compulsory there wouldn't even be a blog to start with.

As it turned out, you made a few intelligent comments, so you were worrying over nothing. smile
Harbal - ah cakes - that rings a bell... barely. I read it when I was 21, and have forgotten 99.9% of it! There is memory lost indeed!
I've been baffled by time as well as space. Both are measured with human measurements such as point A to point B. Birth to death? What happened before time began? How long?
@GermanS...I've already described Time and Space as being a human concept.

I could add that time is CIRCULAR and..like Herbie wrote...past..present..and future is all happening simultaneously.

I wrote a blog about this a while ago and had some very interesting comments.

GG..glad I made you laugh! wink

I remember when I first went to England..when asking a man "have you got the time?"..he would answer "yes..if you give me the opportunity!!" laugh
I agree. Past and future are decided for us and the moment now is the illusion. We call it the moment now but even thats a backward experience of our coordinate in time and space.
Wow Chris..you've impressed me!.thumbs up
You can buy madeleine cakes at the supermarket, Fargo. They don't look very good; I doubt if they would be memorable.
It certainly is baffling, Fay. confused
Chestney ~ I love your brain. Yes for those like me who believe in eternity I know that living life on a different and higher realm we will understand 100% timelessness, the past/present/ furture as being one and the same because, time will cease to be.
I went to the School of Philosophy some years ago for 2 evening classes per week. I studied all the right books [to name drop ] and what the various teachers had to say, and I decided some of them were up their own a**-s if you will pardon me being crude. Great philosophers but all coming from their own philosophy and life experience and I don't pretend to be well educated in the classics. But that is my tuppence worth. Not thinking is an art form for me when I go deep in to my transcendental meditation and stay there for about 20 mins twice a day.daydream pizza
It's hard to see how there can be a now in a constantly progressing linear process, Chesney, so it would seem that either time is not a linear process, or the now is, indeed, an illusion.
Well then forget them and be done, regret not the madeleine deceased. Oh a distant memory of a Madeleine long gone - luscious she was - no she was a Margarita. I'll drink to that, lemon salt and all. She told me one night how convenient it was that neither of us had another, but I had to tell her that in fact I did, and that was that. The luscious Margarita, 1969-70 vintage. It's reminiscence time.
I envy you, gg, I only get time for one 20 min nap per day. smile
I'm far too restless to be able to meditate, gg, the very thought of it makes me feel agitated. uh oh
Fargo ~ you could always write a little short story about the luscious Margarita ? sounds interesting. Being Fargo, you would write well. I can tell. lightbulb drink pouring dancing writing
Harb ~ you sit back or lie back and just repeat a particular word which is meaningless. If other thoughts come in, let them. just slowly sink back and say the word slowly over and over and your alpha waves all ease out and you go very deep in to a self relaxed state.
I have started out sessions being tired, agitated or annoyed. You could say CS over and over but that would make you jump out of the window. Just something like Relax probably would work as well as my secret Hindu word.
I did not think it would work, it does. If you can nap during the day for 20 mins that is great. I love a nap. When I worked in Civil service we had rest rooms where we would set a clock timer and have a nap during lunch time if we were tired. it was terrific, a half an hour and back to work feeling great.

We had a sort of hard bed with a disposable cover and pillow cover. It was heaven though.
I once tried meditation years ago, gg. It nearly drove me mad, all my nerves ended up jangling. I guess I'm just not the meditating type. I will just have to settle for putting all my meaningless words into my blogs, rather than trying to meditate on them.
I can bare witness to the fact that an obsession with time and by extension punctuality is not a universally shared concept, especially in Mexico and Latin America.
Soonyuleknow ~ you can add Ireland to that list. A cup of Tea before anything starts or more recently coffee.
Harb ~ I understand. Some people get very agitated when they try to meditate and one of the students on the course for it got migraines. 2. I phoned that woman and felt embarrassed annoying her but she is a wizard and an It nerd. She thinks it has been hacked again, will collect tomorrow so thanks for pushing me. I didn't want to phone her at home. Going for my nap now [not meditation] just a wee nap under the Duvet for about half an hour. Heaven. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzsleep
I hear the Spanish are the same, Soon. Perhaps they are smarter than we are. dunno
Surely your future is being decided by the choices you make as you live in the present. In my opinion, and I have to say, experience, that means forward thinking and planning for your future.

Your destiny is in your hands but sometimes fate has a way of altering your designated journey and not always in a good way. I like to view life as a giant learning curve. Some people learn from past demeanours others just carry on down the path of destruction.

If we were able to see into the future and didn't like what we saw could we alter our course or is it all mapped out beforehand ?

Always remember though that life isn't a dress rehearsal.
I am all too aware that life isn't a rehearsal, spitz, which would be fine if only I could remember my lines. uh oh
"Life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans." John Lennon
@ Harbal

I wouldn't worry too much about fluffing your lines. laugh

I'm more concerned about keeping my age lines at bay.blushing
