Mae West and her quotes

I didn't want to hijack Chat's blog, even though I was tempted to.
Mae West was funny, innovative, and way ahead of her time.
She was a favorite of mine when I was a child.
I used to love watching her old films in black & white,
when I was a little kid, and especially loved when she teamed up with WC Fields,
who was also funny and a favorite of mine.
I used to be able to do imitations of their voices.
Maybe I still can. I haven't tried in many decades.

Amazingly, Mae got her start in Vaudeville at 8 years old after winning a song contest at age 6. She did a lot of her own writing. She even added words to the song she sang in the contest.

Throughout her life she had excellent quotes, often a play on words and also often a play
of something slightly risque. And she was right in that it wasn't just what she said,
but the way she said it.

Here are some;

"When I'm good, I'm very good.
But, when I'm bad, I'm better."

"I'll try anything once.
Twice if I like it and 3 times to be sure."

"It's not the men in my life that count.
It's the life in my men."

"Love conquers all, except poverty and a toothache."

"If I asked for a cup of coffee, someone would look for double meaning."

"Save a boyfriend for a rainy day, and another in case it doesn't rain."

"Give a man a free hand, and he'll run it all over you."

"Whenever I'm caught between 2 evils, I'll take the one I never tried before."

"I used to be Snow White, but I drifted."

"Those who are easily shocked, should be shocked more often,"

"He's the kind of man, a woman would have to marry to get rid of."

"An ounce of performance is worth pounds of promises."

"Don't marry a man to reform him.
That's what reform schools are for."

"Anything worth doing, is worth doing slowly."

"The score never interests me, only the game."

"It's not what I do, but the way I do it.
It's not what I say, but the way I say it."

"Love isn't an emotion or an instinct, It's an art."

"Look your best. Who said love is blind ?"

"I've been on more laps, than a napkin."

"I speak two languages, body and English."

"I'm no model lady.
A model is just an imitation of the real thing."

"Opportunity knocks for every man,
but you have to give a woman a ring."

"Every man I meet wants to protect me.
I can't imagine what from,"

"Personally, I like two types of men, domestic and foreign."

"Cultivate your curves.
They may be dangerous, but they won't be avoided."

"Any time you got nothing to do and lots of time to do it,
come on up."

"I see you're a man with ideals.
I better leave while you still have them."

"A man in the house is worth 2 in the street."

"All discarded lovers, should be given a chance.
But, with someone else."

"I want a man who is good, but not too good.
The good die young and I hate a dead one."

"His mother should have thrown him out and kept the stork."

"It's better to be looked over, than overlooked."

"I generally avoid temptation, unless I can't resist it."

"When women go wrong, men go right after them."

"To err is human, but it feels divine."

"Too much of a good thing, can be wonderful."

"She's the type of woman, who climbed the ladder of success wrong by wrong."

"A hard man is good to find".

"Don't keep a man guessing too long.
He's bound to find the answer elsewhere."

"Ten men waiting for me at the door ?
Send one of them home, I'm tired."

"Love thy neighbor, and if he happens to be tall, debonair, and
devastating, it will be that much easier."

"I only has yes men around me.
Who needs no men ?"

"He who hesitates, is a damn fool !"

"A man's kiss is his signature."

"Goodness ? Goodness had nothing to do with it."

"Sex is emotion in motion."

and perhaps most famously,

"Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me ?"

Speaking of W C Fields (as you did) two of his best known quotes relate to fish in water and liking children. It's sometimes difficult to know for sure the source and exact words he used, and they probably get adapted and embellished. For water there are at least three variants, and for children I can find fried, parboiled, properly cooked. There'll be more for sure. A movie source would be good, but he himself may well have re-used and modified them.
For the record, the pizza was awesome!
F - from memory I remember WC being asked by a reporter how he liked children.
(He was working with a child co-star actor in a movie at the time and found it frustrating).
So, he jokingly responded "boiled".
That wasn't on film. But, I think it may have made it later into film.

Again from memory (so not swearing it to be 100% true), WC was asked if he wanted some water (a glass of) and he replied, "No. I know what fish do in it."
Jim, I'll pass as I didn't care much for WC Fields.
