Bob Dylan selling his entire music catalog...

I had no reason to question why Guns N' Roses covered music from other artists. I've always hear the original composer gets 50% of the royalties. I blogged about this before as music of the 50's often were covered many times by lots of no-name artists looking for exposure.

It was just a boost as we already know guns N' Roses. Last year, I heard on my local classic rock station they were asked by Dylan to record the song as he was broke and needed some royalty money.

Last week, it was reported Bob Dylan sold his song catalog to Universal Media Group to an undisclosed amount. People on the grapevine are saying it's around $300 million.

I've heard a few artists who can no longer tour due to COVID-19 are experiencing financial strains and possibly they are seeking other areas to make money.

David Crosby is complaining that music streaming is cutting his income and planning to sell his music catalog too.
300 million for a man in his mid 80's now and no more tax filings for any future royalties. I can see why.
I'm kinda shocked that his Catalogue was worth 300 million.

I was talking to a friend of mine who is a big Dylan fan about this, and she said his personal life was in a heap as he had several wives and loads of Kids and he was having to support them all. In that case no wonder the man is broke.
One of the most talented songwriters of our generation.

It is refreshing to see a blog not about politics...

Stevie Nix sold and Dolly Parton is considering selling also. Interest rates are quite low, so streaming companies can pay more and the royalties are taxable income. For millionaires that tax rate is above the capital gains rate, and with Biden as president, that income tax rate for millionaires is about to go up. So, right now it pays more than ever to sell.

Will you be selling your music catalog too ?

I've got one song that was never published...

"You're the girl for me and everyone can see..."
It might be time to publish it and rake in that "entire Collection" sale.
In their haste to buy buy buy, they might overlook the contents of that collection. laugh
