The death toll is rising...

The signs of a troubled structure were ignored. Nearly half of the Champlain Towers a 12-story condo on Miami Beach (town of Surfside) collapsed last week and rescue operations are into the 5th day hoping to find survivors. More than 11 confirmed dead and 150 unaccounted for.

Sure there are going to be thorough and full investigations but engineers reports of structure damage years ago weren't followed up.

Already photos of cracked supports and accounts of water penetration around the building have surfaced. Nothing was done. Last night on the news they showed a report from an engineering company stating the supports were unstable and a report after of the building inspector saying the building was in good condition.

Official news reports state that 55 apartments of the 136 units were destroyed.
My prediction is the remaining 81 units will be destroyed when the structure gets condemned.

Lawsuits will be into the billions...

They sure paid the price for not moving faster on the projects the building needed. Everyone seems to be looking for someone to blame. One suit has been filed against the condo association already.
Why the report stating the supports were unstable wasn't followed with effective repairs needs to be closely looked into.
12 dead, 149 missing.
Search and rescue crews are working round the clock, hampered by rain.
Footage today shows many on their hands and knees using 5-gallon buckets sifting through a mountain of rubble.
sug, I'm certain there will be dozens of lawsuits.
Class action from the surviving family members comes to mind.

Jim, the reason repairs were ignored will probably be revealed on one of the investigations.

Bohe, In a former life, I worked for a company who made architectural windows and doors. I'm pretty sure there are laws about panic strikes for fire exits.

nam, sadly, you are correct. Too often doing the right thing comes after loss of life.
"Criminal negligence refers to conduct in which a person ignores a known or obvious risk, or disregards the life and safety of others. Federal and state courts describe this behavior as a form of recklessness, where the person acts significantly different than an ordinary person under similar circumstances"

CBS12 update:
Rescue teams recovered several more bodies, including those of two children, at the site of the condo collapse in Surfside on Wednesday, pushing the death toll to 18.
The two children were four and 10 years old, according to Miami Dade-County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. Their names have not been released.
Mayor Levine Cava said the inclement weather slowed things down, but crews are still pushing through.

The Town of Surfside as made public documents pertaining to Champlain Towers and recertification of other buildings more than 30 years old.
