Was it breaking and entering if the door was unlocked?

This story is about Wu, Li and Liang. No... they aren't famous Chinese lawyers. One of them will need a lawyer, but I doubt it will help.
Yvonne Wu was in a relationship with Jenny Li and they dated for two years. They broke up 3 weeks ago.
Jenny found a new lover, Jamie Liang and the two of them were in Jenny's home when Yvonne arrived and entered through the back door that was unlocked.

Some background information:
Yvonne Wu, 31, is a police officer who works at the 72nd Precinct NYPD.

Using a police issued Glock 19, Wu (allegedly) fired multiple shots at the 2 women.
Li was able to call 911.
Liang later died and Li took a bullet through an artery and into a lung. She escaped death.

One story reported Wu found them in bed.

Wu, is a five-year veteran of the force, now charged with murder and attempted murder.
Following her arrest, she admitted wanting to kill herself.

My opinion: Yeah, had she done that Jamie would be alive and Jenny wouldn't be in the hospital recovering.

I saw this story a few days ago when it was first reported and again today when more detail came forth.

I take issue with the news story calling it a love triangle. Technically, the relationship between Yvonne and Jenny had already ended.
Yvonne entered through an unlocked door. It would appear that was considered breaking and entering.

Guns & jealousy is not a good mix.
It sounds like it was a jealous lover scenario coupled with a trigger happy police officer 'persona'. But this person should never have been allowed to be in the police force being as they obviously had no mental stability or self control.

Officer Wu began her career as a member of the NYPD’s Explorers program. Sources said she received four medals and good evaluations consistently.
Housebreaking or entering with intent to commit a crime

Housebreaking or entering with intent to commit a crime consists of unlawfully and intentionally breaking into and/or entering a unlocked building or structure with the intention of committing some crime in it.
Is a crime here.
I don't know about the law in there .. But in my opinion , as there were people in the house and they did not invite or give permission to enter or did not even know about the entering , so yes , it was clearly a trespassing , no matter if all the doors were widely open.. conversing
A retired police officer told me: Unauthorized entry into an occupied dwelling would be the correct charge.
I think murder trumps all the other charges
To be talking about an unlocked door when a murder and attempted murder was committed seems irrelevant.
Regardless, more information:

ChesneyChrist, I don't have any idea what you are talking about. Wrong blog perhaps?
Pedro, that information wasn't in the 2 stories I read and was written to appear the relationship had already ended.

My blog title was about the bated news headline of breaking and entering.
tbh, the names in this story confused me.
i had an experience of kicking out an ex boyfriend. i own the property but he still had a key. even though i dumped him, since he had lived there i had to have a constable post a letter on both doors stating ex was evicted.

before i had the letter posted, my ex showed up.

luckily, when ex showed up, i had changed the locks.
if the ex in your story never lived there, i'd call it more of a domestic case. jmo.
@Chesney another incoherent rant - against police and rich in stereotypical and ignorant views. You are truly bizarre.
