Two things a salesman should avoid...

Taught by a successful salesman I learned not to talk about Religion or Politics with clients.
Whenever they try to bring things up that are taboo, I steer the conversation away.

Design and price are the reasons for the meeting.

One of the strangest clients lingered on politics in the first meeting. After, I Googled their name to find a Facebook page with photos of them in costumes performing some odd bondage acts.

I priced the job considerably higher than it should have been. A week later the contractor notified me. They went with another cabinet company! Good.

Two rules. No Religion and no Politics.

I'm revising that to include a third rule. Nothing... not a word about the wife's looks.
I went to one appointment and the guy had a 'trophy wife' with stunning looks like a fashion model. I could see he was waiting for me to say something.
Sorry... no can do and that's a rule.

And Chati, you have a stunning wife shimmy thumbs up
Thanks, but I cannot talk about that! laugh
"Two rules. No Religion and no Politics."

This avoids one from throwing the company's name as well as my own name under the bus.
The 'trophy wife' can be complimented in person privately if occasion arises. laugh
When my bro was a salesman - he earned my utmost respect with his philosophy which included your rules above. His added rule was never bring negativity about a competitor. He always used a positive approach of how much his company could accomplish. I so respected that.

For some funny reasons most members of my family could be salesman because we all have the gift of gab. Even my favorite years as a craftsman, I had to be the sales man to sell our art. My husband swore I could sell a snowball to an Eskimo. Once I did sell a picture to a blind man, a real cranky one at that, in the end he turned out to be a sweet old retired high up vet.
Oh btw.. my Giant and I have made one rule. If we want to talk about Religion or Politics, we only have 10 minutes. That's it. NO MORE! grin
