Top of the pops for Schubert
Not quite my top - die Forelle ranks as one of my favourites.Schubert - Ständchen - Fischer-Dieskau / Moore 1958
This today came up in conversation with a Chinese student of mine who also studies German, and we were discussing German literature (in English). The words come from Shakespeare and then others, some posthumously. The melody I recall my father often whistling way back then in the early 50's. Fischer-Dieskau's diction is just amazing!
Leise flehen meine Lieder
Durch die Nacht zu dir;
In den stillen Hain hernieder,
Liebchen, komm zu mir!
Flüsternd schlanke Wipfel rauschen
In des Mondes Licht;
Des Verräters feindlich Lauschen
Fürchte, Holde, nicht.
Hörst die Nachtigallen schlagen?
Ach! sie flehen dich,
Mit der Töne süßen Klagen
Flehen sie für mich.
Sie verstehn des Busens Sehnen,
Kennen Liebesschmerz,
Rühren mit den Silbertönen
Jedes weiche Herz.
Laß auch dir die Brust bewegen,
Liebchen, höre mich!
Bebend harr' ich dir entgegen!
Komm, beglücke mich!

Quite a few of the guitar versions I find are too slow, this tempo seems about right.
(The preview doesn't show the youtube - not sure all is ok)
then...lately the tune suddenly came into my head and
I've been playing it on the piano.
As for the "Ständchen"...beautiful music.
I've also been playing it but, still needs some improvement.
