Other languages handle goodbyes better - au revoir, and tot ziens, not so final
On a more positive note, most of the time, though it might be somewhat sad, a good bye is the start of something new. It's that stuff what keeps us alive. Monotony is the real killer.

I do have selected friends that I kept in touch on FB. Everytime I am in another country I tried to unfollow them and just surprise them @ the right time. Nice terms for goodbye
