Depending on the source, it's said Thomas Edison invented the incandescent light bulb and had upwards of 10,000 failed experiments prior to success.From what I've read, Edison was in a race for time as several European inventors were also doing similar experiments and that incandescent lighting was already in existence.
What he did, is come up with a patent on a commercially successful bulb with a viable filament.
