Anne frank....

Dead people receive more flowers than the living ones because regret is stronger than gratitude.

In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.

The good news is that you don’t know how great you can be!

Anne Frank lived through a horrendous period. A very sad time for millions of people. So sad for her, and shows the worst nature of some people. Unfortunately, some regimes today still practice genocide and a total disregard for human life. What is it about political leaders who manage to gain power and inflict their philosophy on a population?
An intelligent mature and insightful young woman - several of my early teens female students have read the diary in English and/or Chinese or Vietnamese, but I always ask them to clear it with their parents, because there are some adult aspects (sexuality, adolescence) that parents might not approve of. A barely 13 year old Vietnamese girl read and finished it last week and in discussion demonstrates an impressive grasp - we had just finished some Edgar Allan Poe the week before, I must try to find her something a little less grim! laugh Chekhov for this week, and that's not exactly light going. Thank goodness she has no interest in The Whimpy Kid and has lost interest in Harry Potter.

I wonder if the diary of Anne Frank would ever be read in North Korea or Burma or Russia or China.
@crown well yes, so far two of my Chinese and one Vietnamese students have read it - strange question. Literature is literature and reading is reading. Have you read Dream of Red Chamber or Genji Monogatari?
Fargo
I asked the question because in those countries the freedom of expression is restricted. To lock yourself away in fear is the ultimate restriction and demonstrates how bad things can get.
I haven't read the books you mention.
@crown well they have the freedom to explore and read what they want by and large. Dream of Red Chamber is a famous Chinese novel. Genji Monogatari is a Japanese novel written over 1000 years ago by a woman. Hard read, but worth the effort. Don't extol your 'democratic freedom' too much. Of course I have no North Korean but I certainly do have south Korean students. Fundamentally people are not different.

I agree that people are fundamentally the same. It's the regime that controls them that is the problem.
