ARE ALL GOOD DEEDS SELFISH?
Yes, they are. If you help someone through a charitable act, such as giving a poor person money or buying them food, you would normally feel good from performing those kind of acts. The only reason you make those gestures is to satisfy your own mental needs and increase your well being.Of course the person receiving the act of kindness would also benefit, but if there was no mental reward yourself, would you still have performed the act of kindness?

Of course, there's always a mental reward in everything we do.
We get satisfaction out of helping someone.
But ...how can we know otherwise?
How do we know otherwise?
Well, after practicing the acts of kindness, you get to know what it feels like and the reward. So it could encourage you to be even greedier to get that mental boost.
People follow religion to get a mental uplift. They shut out whatever truth may be thrown at them, so that they are not denied their drug.

But what do you suggest?
That we shouldn't do any acts of kindness at all?
Even if done from the heart, it's very difficult to be neutral and stay detached from the results.
If you wish to get your mental fix, you just look for acts of kindness. No need to stop. You could get drunk with your charitable nature. Some really wealthy people do it. That computer guy and his wife( Microsoft ). They give some of their wealth away. Why? Makes them feel less guilty about life.
Also you say if done from the heart?
Does heart come into it? If it's just mental reward, there is no such thing as heartfelt.

We shouldn't help people who ask for help?
I suggested staying detached.
No. You don't have to stay detached unless you wish to. There's nothing wrong with helping people and making yourself happy. Whether you're good or bad makes no difference. The motivation is the reward.
These acts produce hormones which are responsible for the mental boost.
You may have experienced this after exercise. Hormones produced again to make you feel good.
If you stop exercising routine, you may feel guilty and try to maintain the regime as you know the reward is there. That's why you see joggers everywhere after their fix.
So you can stay detached and get your kicks on route 66.

Route 66 still exists, but not quite the same as originally, I understand. I believe there is a bypass or alternative route. Maybe I'm wrong?
Everything has a knock on affect so maybe a good deed helps someone else to pass one on.
Same as pst pass it on
Why else would they bother?

Please clarify, and less of the silly man comment. No need for rudeness.
yes.... i agree....
it does boost oneself.
You seem to be on here all day just putting an adverse saying or whatever.
When one walks along the street and smiles, folk smile back--fr what you might say, its the knock on affect.
If you do a good deed it might be for self gratification but not everyone is like you ----- man

Nice thought
I couldn't even think of it.
I always welcome new thoughts.
If we do not feel anything after doing something, then maybe we will be like a robot. We don't want to do anything from our side. We will be inactive. We will be active only when someone program us for some work.
If we were robots, we wouldn't bother doing so called good deeds, because there would be no gratification. Because we are human, we can enjoy the mental stimulation of the act.

Helping someone may involve a self-sacrifice so your question is facile really, and if you think about it you'll agree. Is saving someone in a burning car at risk to yourself selfish?
Saving someone in a burning car. If you ignored the situation you would feel guilty for ever. So in order to escape that torment, you know you must help. Purely selfish reasons, but it may save a life as well.

well said...
Star of the blogs.
So, if you didn't save them, would you feel guilty, yes or no?
Quite right. I agree. Glad you now accept my thoughts.
If a small kid is drowning in water, then we do not think anything at that time, we only save him. Everyone has a natural tendency to save.
Even animals also save others.
In some cases, maybe we think of guilt and feel-good.
Such thought is good for deep research but not good for practical life.
A nervous reaction to seek reassurance that they are no threat...
.
i agree
