Does untreated depression cause brain damage?
The evidence affirms that depression truly is a biologically based disorder of the brain, and left unchecked, it may run a degenerative course that damages brain tissue in ways similar to other neurodegenerative diseases.

Who is at highest risk for depression?
Major depression is most likely to affect people between the ages of 45 and 65. “People in middle age are at the top of the bell curve for depression, but the people at each end of the curve, the very young and very old, may be at higher risk for severe depression,”.

What can happen if you don't treat depression?
Untreated clinical depression is a serious problem. Untreated depression increases the chance of risky behaviors such as drug or alcohol addiction. It also can ruin relationships, cause problems at work, and make it difficult to overcome serious illnesses.

the main reason of depression?
There's no single cause of depression. It can occur for a variety of reasons and it has many different triggers. For some people, an upsetting or stressful life event, such as bereavement, divorce, illness, redundancy and job or money worries, can be the cause. traumas and emotional wounds… even the tiniest negative experiences that
had forgotten about… are robbing of the happiness

Depression is Anger and Sadness turned inward. To eliminate depression completely and forever, the root cause of the anger and sadness needs to be discovered, processed and replaced with healthy and effective beliefs, thoughts feelings, and actions.

I was diagnosed with depression when I was 15 years old, later to be diagnosed as bipolar II. I had a very nice childhood, so trauma wasn't the culprit. However, I had relatives who had clinical depression so heredity can be a factor. Yes, I am an alcoholic in recovery for 22 years now, but that can be linked to heredity also.

Untreated depression will not cause you to become psychotic. Other life occurrences may lead to psychosis. For some years I was untreated, meaning I didn't take meds and I did ok. I believe that taking meds can lead to brain damage. I had one relative who took imipramine for decades and she ended up with having dementia. I have been on meds for the last 20 years.

Everything I said is anecdotal, as depression is still a mystery.
teenameena ~ I am sure you have read recent medical reports from various universities, Harvad and also journals [medical ] saying that SSRIs and the Serotonin up take story were in fact disproved.
There are people with low levels of Serotonin who don't suffer with Depression.
It has also been revealed that blind trials with SSRIs proved that the placebo effect was interesting and hidden. The fact is, placebo is very strong. The Serotin or lack of is a myth in the cause of Depression .
However, these SSRIs have many side effects and heart conditions, eye conditions like Glaucoma and obesity are only a few, plus the risk of Dementia and similar goes up.
Yet there does seem to be an anti inflammatory aspect to SSRIS. As I have taken these tablets for clinical depression I have found that they have helped my psoriasi on scalp. also arthritis inflammation. So I don't think they should be thrown out yet as even though lies were told and the effects exaggerated the drugs have given help and aided sleep in many people taking them.

I am not a Doctor but I always have an open mind. Pharma are no saints but without them people would not be living as long as they do. Depression makes our thinking negative, robs us of self esteem and any feeling of happiness and it can get so bad we can't make a decision . 3 to 4 weeks on an increased dose does show improvements. Trauma and many other things in my life caused me to suffer even as a child.

Good blog.thumbs up
Hello TM,

I believe attachment might also be a trigger for depression. Once people become detached and accept the beauty the day offers them, it might become easier to traverse life.
