Making adjustments

I never thought that my ‘simple’ lifestyle would be taking such a hit from the rising cost of living. I’ve even asked myself, “Am I high maintenance?hmmm I think I’m frugal enough; when I used to work, I saved more than I spent on frivolities. But now that I’m retired (and haven’t done any private work for a while), the soaring prices have made me become quite cautious. I wouldn’t want to run out of money before my pension could begin, so I’ve been looking at my food and toiletry purchases and thinking about the alternatives.

Years ago, I resolved to eat and drink better tasting/quality foods, and treat myself whenever I felt like it, because I felt that I was working hard and deserved it. For example, I stopped using margarine spreads and switched to ‘real’ New Zealand butter (and cheese), I avoided the budget ice-creams for the much creamier, tastier/healthier ones and when I wanted cheese cake I’d go hunting for ‘baked’ ones, instead of those made from a box. It was a similar thing with toiletries; I opted for some of the better brands. I could easily have afforded them then, but now…not so much, I think.sigh

Making adjustments is usually how we manoeuvre through life each day, but we’re not always ready to do that. I’ve looked at some of my food alternatives and don’t want to switch. I may really have to, but, like a spoilt child, I don’t want to. Great tasting food is one of the few joys in life that I shouldn’t have to compromise on, especially since I’m not a ‘heavy’ eater. moping

I’m not giving up yet; I’m going to continue buying and enjoying them for as long as I could, without resorting to shopliftinglaugh , and make the adjustments as best as possible. Maybe I’ll have to start requesting those items as birthday and holiday gifts instead of the usual (i.e. clothing, perfume, cash, etc).hmmm idea grin

And there are also other adjustments to be made (e.g. fuel consumption, utilities, etc), but all in good time I suppose. blues

Have you had to make any such adjustments lately?

No adjustments yet. But why did you stop working at age 55 or what it was,
when you feel you have the energy to drive an 18 wheeler?
Could you work for somebody half time for instance?
And what would become of that little four legged friend of yours, if you get caught & put behind bars?

So for Gods dogs sake, don't go down the road of shoplifting scold lol
I retired at 56 because I was tired, and stressed and didn't like the 'mandate' that our government had forced upon public service employees to be vaccinated (Covid). I had intended to work from home offering private tutoring and related services (which I was doing before the vaccine mandate). I have stopped doing so for the while, as I'm hoping to move to a new home soon.

As for finding part time work, I've been looking but work-from-home options are somewhat 'slim' at the moment. Going out to work is a possibility, but 'half time'? Not sure what kind of work I'd find. However, that's still a viable option.thumbs up
laugh And what would happen to my Sweetie pie indeed! dunno
Fret not! I wouldn't look good in prison garb, nor appreciate the restrictions, so no shoplifting for me. uh oh grin
I'd love to live in something like that Didi.
Sweet and cosy. Easy to mentain too.

That's exactly how I like to be spoken to batting
Ok, let me make a slight adjustment...

wave Me too. If I owned land, I'd be able to do something like that (but with special timber to keep the termites away).
wave CW, isn't it real cute and cozy, and with creative ideas for saving and decorating.thumbs up
They are very cute, I'd rent one ... I like the idea of calling my landlord when there's a leak instead of finding someone expensive to fix it rolling on the floor laughing
Fix it yourself sizi, it's all on youtube.

laugh I know what you mean, Suzie. That's a viable point.thumbs up
I'm going to have to concur with Oz on this one and say don't give yourself to the land baron, that's how you die of anxiety.
